BACKTRACK - Mt Ballard
Eight hikers met on a warm but gorgeous day to hike up Mt. Ballard, at 7,370 feet the highest peak in the Mule Mountains. Most of the group had hiked this before, so were prepared for the rather unrelenting uphill climb! Two of our group planned on only going part way, but the rest of us made it to the summit and enjoyed snacks and lunch on top. Once again, we all pondered the metal sign with a Bible verse at the summit, wondering who lugged that heavy piece of metal up there and why. After a break we all started the trek down, with the last of us reaching the parking lot by 1 p.m. Another great Muleteam adventure! - Deb

HIKE TO MT. BALLARD PEAK
Join the Muleteam this Saturday, February 28th to hike to the highest point in the Mule Mountains, west of the “Divide” with outstanding views of Bisbee, Mexico, and the Huachuca Mountains. This is a fairly difficult hike on a natural path with a steep rocky section. The total distance round trip is only 3.5 miles, but includes an elevation gain of 1,300 feet. Bring water and snacks or lunch. Back early afternoon. Free. Dogs welcome, but be aware that there is lots of cholla along the narrow trail.

BACKTRACK - San Pedro hike and picnic
Our riverside hike and picnic was as good as ever. About 24 hikers and four dogs. Weather was perfect: sunny and in the mid 60s. Hike to the San Pedro was fine. Some of the team went to the Old Cemetery and then all gathered at the Mill for the classic group photo, followed by another gourmet picnic (special thanks to Laura for her custom Margaritas). After a long meal most of the team continued on the long loop back along the river. See you all next year at the 17th Annual. - Doug

Join the Muleteam this Saturday February 21st for a special relaxing and fun event: our 16th Annual Potluck Riverside Picnic along the San Pedro River. We start at the Historic Fairbank Townsite and walk along a flat and easy trail, first to see the 100+ year old cemetery and then mill ruins until we get to the river in only about 1½ miles. At the riverside we spread out the tablecloths, put out the food and drinks and have a long, relaxing lunch. We ask that everyone bring some food or drink to share. Beer & wine are welcome. All the plates, utensils and glasses will be provided. After lunch everyone has the option to either return to Fairbank the way we came or continue the longer loop route along the river (about 4 more miles).

HIKE TO MURAL HILL
Join the Muleteam this Saturday, February 14th to Mural Hill, one of our most memorable hikes. Those who have been to the crest will never forget the views from the top and will be proudly reminded of the flat high-top mountain when later looking from the traffic circle and down below. This trail of desert path and unused dirt road is a mostly uphill walk with a short, steep scramble to the top. It's about 7 miles total, so bring water and lunch. Back late-afternoon. Meet February 14 at 9:00am at the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain or 9:30am at the end of OK Street to start the hike.

BACKTRACK - Natural Bridge
Our group of 13 first made our way to a ridge with fabulous views of the rock formations of North Bonita Canyon and the surrounding area. Twelve hikers then took the trail down the ridge to a wooded area known as Picket Canyon before another short climb to the viewpoint of the Natural Bridge. The view of the Natural Bridge was slightly impeded by a few trees, which the hike leader thinks had doubled in size since her last hike to the viewpoint. It was still spectacular, surrounded by amazing rhyolite rock formations. One of the hikers has pointed out that the description of a 400 foot elevation gain is misleading, as once you gain the 400 feet, you walk down about the same length and then gain another approximately 400 feet on the return. We saw only one other hiker on the trail, and that was near the end of the trail. This hike is highly recommended to those who have not yet hiked this least used trail in the Chiricuahua National Monument. - Molly

Natural Bridge

HIKE THE NATURAL BRIDGE TRAIL
Join the Muleteam this Saturday to hike the scenic, least used trail in the Chiricahua National Monument. With spectacular rock formations the trail climbs at first, then drops into a pine forest, and ends at the overlook for a small water-carved bridge across the canyon. We will return the same way for a total of 4.8 miles and an approximate total elevation gain of 300-400 feet.
Bring water and lunch, but no dogs. Back late afternoon. Meet February 7 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool (about 1 1/2 hours each way). Trailhead is a small parking area on the left side of the road as you drive up Bonita Scenic Drive, about 1 mile past the Visitor Center. Gas donation is appreciated and there is a possible entrance fee for the park area. For more details contact Molly at 208-720-7518.

 BACKTRACK - Lower Juniper Flats
The weather was perfect for today's hike up to Juniper Flats. We had a great group of 26 hikers and 2 dogs start the trek. We took our time to enjoy the clear views across the canyon, and most participants reached the top before choosing to return via the road or the ridge trail. A few of us descended on a different lower trail and finished the day with snacks and conversation by the fire at base camp. Thank you to Yvette and Dave for providing access to these well-marked trails, and to Neil, the former owner, for sharing the property's history and for his original work clearing the paths. I believe he was the only one who ended up with a scratch during the hike! - Susan

Lower Juniper Flats

"WINDING ROAD" TO JUNIPER FLATS
New for the Muleteam, this 2-2.5 mile hike will start at 1416 N. Old Divide Road, a private property behind the “Winding Road” gate. We will hike up to Juniper Flats via a trail marked with cairns and blazes. It takes about an hour to hike up the 700 ft. of elevation with some very light bouldering required near the top. Along the way, you will have spectacular views of Mt. Ballard and Fissure Peak, as well as close-ups of three primitive mines. From the top you can descend on an alternate route that branches off of the ascent trail or walk back via Juniper Flats Road, the longer but gentler way. Lunch will be at the property upon our return. If folks want a longer hike, then they can walk back to town via West Blvd or the ridge trail off of Juniper Flats.
We will meet at the courthouse at 9am Saturday, Jan. 31 and carpool to the property or meet at 9:20 at the property. Bring water and a snack lunch. Hiking poles are optional, and dogs are welcome. Back by early afternoon. Contact Susan Mayes at 610-220-5287 for more information.

BACKTRACK - Brown Canyon
A weird start to the day: the hike leader's car was dead in her garage, but Larry-to-the-rescue rushed over and scooped her up. So, good. Next surprise: no dogs! 18 hikers, but no dogs. And, of course, one person was left lamenting that she had filled her pocket with dog treats for the occasion. On to the hike: a few pop-ups. First, a pop quiz by Laura, about Brown Canyon Ranch. There was a ringer in the crowd who knew most of the answers, and it turns out he lives right next door to the ranch! Next pop-up was Brad, who was waiting for us at "the trough". He smiled, waved, then zoomed off ahead of us. Third pop-up turned out to be two new (to us) young women who also appeared at the trough, to accompany us the rest of the way. Lunch, as usual, was at the usual, beloved overlook... and no more surprises. All was well. - Laura

BACKTRACK - China Camp
Fourteen hikers and three dogs braved the cold and wind to hike to China Camp in the Dragoons. The sun was shining but there were still several icy patches on the old road that required careful stepping. Lunch was by the running creek. It seemed to finally warm up on the way down to the parking area. - Sandy

SIDETRACK - The San Pedro River needs your support!!
An RV Park is being considered on a property next to the Echoing Hope Ranch off Hereford Rd. This is a terrible location for an RV Park: very close to the river, herbicides will most likely be used to keep the vegetation down to reduce snake surprises (and if snakes are found they will be killed), septic issues close to the water table, trash, human activity will keep away wildlife, and it is a perennial reach so it is richly vegetated and full of wildlife. Our county Supervisor Kathleen Gomez, representing Bisbee, is from Douglas and is not familiar with how precious the river is to her consitituents. She needs to know this. I have been tasked by ardent river lovers not in her district, to face-time with Kathleen so she can hear how passionate we are about preserving the river. I need about three people to come with me to meet with Kathleen (time to be determined). If you are interested, please contact Cado Daily cadomexico@gmail.com or text 520-366-2208. The river thanks you! - Cado

BACKTRACK - Upper Juniper Flats
15 hikers and two dogs hiked a 5 mile loop up on Juniper Flats. The weather and company made for a pleasurable hike. The eastward path led us along the mountainside with lovely views of Wildcat Canyon, Sulfur Springs Valley backdropped by the Swisshelms and Chiricahuas. We turned off the trail and traversed a path down into the lower valley where we stopped to lunch among a camp ruin. After lunch the group followed the switch backs leading to the middle road leading below to the Second tower road where we parked.
