Holenstein Mine

HIKE UP MILLER CANYON TO THE HOLENSTEIN MINE
Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a hike in the Huachucas up the Miller Canyon trail to the old Holenstein Mine. The trail has a little of everything, some easy footing, rocky areas and switchbacks uphill for a roundtrip of about 5 miles and an elevation gain of approximately 1,450 feet. Dogs welcome on leash (wilderness area rules). Bring water, lunch, and poles if you like.
Meet November 15 at 9:00 am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain. From there we will drive to the trailhead. Alternatively meet at 9:45 at the Miller Canyon Trailhead parking area at the END of the road. For more details contact Sandy at 520-353-5124 or slajudice@yahoo.com.

Interesting note - The mine dates back to the 1880's with little ore produced. "The existence of a road up Miller Canyon to the mine and the presence of a large ore bin are inconsistent infrastructure for the size of the workings, indicating a possible stock scheme!"

BACKTRACK - South Perimeter
We had 11 hikers and no dogs for this outing.  6 of the hikers had planned on doing a short hike by only going out for a mile or so.  I led this same hike at the end of last April and it was very hot and we cut the hike short.  Figured by having the hike in the second weekend of November it would be much cooler.  WRONG!  Actually, it was cooler, but still hot.  As a result, we made our resting stops where there was shade from trees.  We only encountered one mountain biker and no other hikers.  And like last April, the 5 remaining hikers decided to have lunch in the Miller Canyon parking lot under the trees rather than hike another ½ mile to the peak where there isn’t any shade.  4 of the hikers returned via the South Perimeter Trail and the other hiker returned via walking on Hwy 92.  By the way the hikers had a good laugh when they saw my small pile of rocks with a little stick on top of the rocks to point the way to cross the creek to reach the Miller Canyon parking lot.  They said it was good that I was still with them, otherwise they would have hiked past it. - Ed
