BACKTRACK - Galena to Gold Gulch Road
Muleteam welcomed some new hikers among the fourteen human and two canine participants in this local hike. Near the beginning we took in the underappreciated Galena Park. From there the route gave us some unfamiliar perspectives on familiar places – from Galena to Bakerville by footpath, and then through Warren on an old railbed. We paralleled Airport Road, again on dirt, until we got to Gold Gulch Road. Our lunch spot was a large concrete slab whose history we puzzle over every year. Next to it is a dirt track which we are told hosted demolition derbies back in the day. We headed back the way we came, with some taking alternate routes home or stopping at Vista Park. Another good day out-of-doors! - Elizabeth

SIDETRACK - Bisbee Bikeways
Local non-profit organization Bisbee Bikeways is working to create a network of pathways for bicycling, walking, and other uses. The City Council has approved one of the options developed in their feasibility study, for a path around the Lavender Pit. The organizers report in the Observer that they are working on a grant to fund its final design and construction, and that a local resident has agreed to match any funds they raise in order to make the application more competitive. They are accepting donations for that purpose during January.

HIKE GALENA TO GOLD GULCH ROAD

Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a hike in Warren and surrounding areas. Near the start we will take in Galena Park and its native-vegetation trail. Footpaths and an old railroad trackbed will take us through Warren and south to Gold Gulch Road. There we will check out an old motor racetrack before heading back the way we came. The hike is about 6 miles total, flat and easy but with little shade. Bring water and lunch/snack, back early afternoon. Free. Dogs ok with leash.

Meet January 22 at 9 a.m. by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain. We will drive from there to start the hike from Hwy 92. For more information contact Elizabeth, ebernstein2001@yahoo.com.

BACKTRACK - Ridge Trail to Juniper Flats
It was a beautiful winter day for the sixteen hikers and five dogs to hike the ridge above Bisbee out to Juniper Flats and lunch at the pagoda overlook. Some of us went over the top of three ridges while others chose to hike around on the more traveled path. Both ways afforded great views of Bisbee, as well as the surrounding mountains and valleys. Two hikers joined us at the Locklin connector and one hiker went at his own slower pace and joined us at the pagoda. It was an opportune time for the hikers newer to the area to be shown other side trails, such as the trails to Adams, Locklin, and the Gulch. A few hikers returned via Wood Canyon and the rest continued down Juniper Flats to West Blvd. and back home or to their cars at the courthouse. A special thanks goes to Larry for providing the phone camera tripod and remote to snap the group photo; we hope his phone survived its three-foot back gainer to the ground! The wind gusted right after Larry pressed the remote. OUCH. -- Susan M.

Ridge Trail to Juniper Flats

HIKE BISBEE RIDGE TO JUNIPER FLATS

Join the Muleteam this Saturday for THE BEST views of Old Bisbee! This 6.33 mile round-trip hike starts up Clawson Ave. to High Road and then on to the City Trail and Ridge Trail. The most challenging section is climbing up to the Ridge Trail, where some light rock scrambling is required. You will be rewarded with the views, which get better and better as you ascend!  We will hike up and down the ridges overlooking town and lower Wildcat Canyon all the way to Juniper Flats. We'll eat lunch at the pagoda and enjoy the view. The return is ALL downhill, walking on Juniper Flats Rd. to West Blvd. and back down to Tombstone Canyon. Bring water, lunch, walking poles optional, dogs welcome.  Back early afternoon.

Meet Jan. 15 at 9 a.m. by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain. Free. For more details contact Susan Mayes at 610-220-5287.

BACKTRACK - Mural Hill
This hike was originally scheduled for New Year's Day, but the weather was lousy: a rare Muleteam cancellation. A week later, one good dog and twelve hikers set off for "Mural Hill: Redux" from the end of OK Street. One had to turn back due to a prior commitment, but eleven of us enjoyed the weather and company (both good), reaching the top in two hours (and back in one). It was gusty, but we enjoyed the fossils and great views. Weren't we surprised when we checked the register and learned that four people who had met at the fountain on New Year's Day toughed it out: their entry read "Crazy weather -- snow, sleet, rain, wind!" A tip of my hat to them, I'm glad they made it. Thanks to everyone for another great day in the Mules -- Lindsay

PEGGY SCANLON MEMORIAL
Eleven of us Muleteamers attended the Celebration of Life for Peggy, joining friends and family from near and far who gathered to remember this remarkable woman. Several in our group shared their memories of Peggy, reminiscing not only about "official" Muleteam events, but also about offshoot groups like the Fugarwi's. It was a moving and meaningful day. -- Elizabeth

Mural Hill Redux

RESCHEDULED HIKE TO MURAL HILL aka LOS CHRISTOS

Join the Muleteam this Saturday to hike from Old Bisbee to this exposed fin of rock so noticeable from the traffic circle. The hike, originally planned for New Year's Day, was rescheduled due to inclement weather on January 1. The route is a mix of desert trail and unused dirt road, with a short, steep scramble to the top, where we'll break to enjoy views and fossils. Bring water, lunch, poles if you use them, and dogs if you have them; the hike is free. Wear long pants, the catclaw is fierce. The round trip from our meetup at the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain is approximately 8 miles and 1,500' of altitude gain; we will return mid-afternoon. Meet Jan 8 at 9 a.m.; text questions to Lindsay at 954-770-2221.
