Fort Bowie

EXPLORE HISTORIC FORT BOWIE, APACHE SPRINGS AND APACHE PAST
Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a short hike in a scenic area full of Butterfield Stage route, cavalry and Apache history. This is one of the most significant historic sites in Cochise County. The hike to the fort is only about 3 miles round trip on a trail with slight elevation gain, but there's more optional walking among the fort remains. Bring water and lunch. Back late afternoon. Meet Jan 7 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool. It’s at least a 90 minute drive each way, with the last 8 miles on unpaved, but easily drivable road. Free. For more details contact Molly at 432-3902 or eeo.source@gmail.com.

BACKTRACK - Stair Sights
Nice day for a local hike with about 20 people exploring some obscure stairs and paths of Old Bisbee. We saw mosaics, sculpture, the Buddhist shrine above Ok Street, the art gallery alley off the gulch and many murals including two I recently painted at my house. Good views from the end of High Road and the top of Castle Rock. We walked at a slow pace and took lots of photos. Some people dropped out along the way and the remaining had lunch at High Desert Market.  - Larry

Bisbee Cross

HIKE TO THE BISBEE CROSS
Join us at 9:00am at the Old Bisbee Courthouse on Saturday December 24th for a Muleteam Christmas tradition: hiking to the Bisbee Cross with some of the very best views of Old Bisbee. The Cross is surrounded by amazing, sometimes strange, offerings. This is a local hike of only about three miles and mostly easy except for a fairly short steep final ascent to the Cross. When we get down to Brewery Avenue you have the option of going directly downtown or returning the way we came. One way or another, we’ll all get back about noon and in time for any holiday plans. Bring water, a snack and poles if you like. For more details contact Sandy at slajudice@yahoo.com or 520-353-5124

BACKTRACK - Juniper Flats
10 hikers and no dogs braved low temperatures-- high just below 50 F-- to leave from Mule Pass, above the tunnel, and make the hike on the Juniper Flats service road to the farthest communications tower complex. The weather was nice otherwise with bright sunlight and only a slight breeze. The road was mostly ice free,  though wet and muddy almost all the way. There was an extended stretch of icy track shortly before the last towers were reached, but we and some motor vehicles were undaunted. A lot of other outdoor recreationists were seen besides our group though they were all using motor vehicles as transport. One ice walker fell through the pond found about half way to the end, but a car was standing by to provide warm and dry conditions for recovery. Periodic stops by our hikers did not work completely as planned, but the party kept from getting too spread out despite a faster pace than I would have preferred. Lunch was liesurely with a nice westward view from the last towers. No serious mishaps experienced but a lot of mud on the soles of our footwear by the time we got back to the pass.  - Brad

BACKTRACK - Mule Mountain Mosey epilogue
Seventeen hikers and one dog enjoyed a calm, and utterly perfect weather day hiking up the ridge toward one of the tallest peaks on the western side of the Mule Mountains. Four hikers, including the youngest and oldest hiker, climbed to the summit in front of the Douglas’s property off of Hwy. 80. Another four reached the rock outcropping near the top, and everyone hiked well beyond the shade structure where we enjoyed relaxing, snacking, and viewing the gorgeous scenery. A special thanks to those who waited for others in their smaller group so that no one was left behind! Again, we appreciate Gordon and Diana’s hospitality, opening up their beautiful property to us.  - Susan Mayes

NW Mule Mtn

NORTHWEST MULE MOUNTAIN MOSEY
Join us for a “new-to-the-Muleteam” hike in the Mule Mountains on December 10th! This out-and-back hike has three stages: there is something for everyone on this route. There's an easy switchback ascent to a low hill with a shade structure and ample seating, followed by a walk along the ridge west toward the peaks, and an optional rock-scramble summit to "Mount Gordon." The full route is 3.1 miles total with 1,705 feet of elevation gain. You are rewarded with the best views, including Sierra Vista and the Huachucas. Even if you choose to do the whole hike and peak ascension, you would still be back by early afternoon.

Gordon and Diana Douglas have graciously offered their property as access. We will meet at the courthouse at 9 am Saturday, Dec. 10 and carpool to their property, 3137 W. Hwy 80. It is on the left, about 3 miles after the Mule Pass tunnel between mile markers 337 and 336 when heading north on Hwy 80. After an orange mailbox on the left, look for the far end of a long guardrail, and the driveway is at the end of the guardrail on the left with a sharp left turn. We will put out an orange cone and a Mule team sign. Bring water and a snack lunch. Sunscreen is recommended as there is little shade. Hiking poles are optional, and dogs are welcome. Contact Susan Mayes at 610-220-5287 for more information.

BACKTRACK - Holenstein Mine
There were eight folks (no dogs) that began the hike on a cloudy day, seven persevered all the way up to the Mine.  The temperature was perfect with the cloud cover and the moisture in the air brought out all the wonderful smells of Fall foliage.  The hike was a  strenuous uphill and it started to rain just before we reached the mine.  The opening provided just enough shelter to give us a dry lunch spot where we enjoyed watching the clouds come up the canyon and eventually obscure the opposite mountainside.  We were all careful coming down the wet trail to avoid any unfortunate events.  I think everyone agreed it was a hard but really enjoyable hike!  -Sandy

SIDETRACK - FIRST AID TRAINING AVAILABLE TO MULETEAM

Dave Perry, Emergency First Aid expert with Bisbee Fire/EMS met with some Muleteam hikers on Saturday, December 3rd. Because of our concern about the possibility of another injury on one of our future hikes we asked Dave to tell us what might be available by way of emergency first aid training for us. Emergency treatment for sprains, fractures, cuts/bleeding, and chest pains/trouble breathing due to exertion or heat are the issues we are most interested in. Dave is willing to conduct training in multiple short (15-30 minute) sessions or in one 2-4 hour program. There is no charge.

We would like feedback as to who might be interested in participating, specific training you might want, and whether you would prefer one long training program or several short sessions on treatment for specific issues. With short sessions, you can come to some or all sessions, depending on what topics interest you. The sessions can be outside at the Courthouse fountain where we meet for hikes or at the Firehouse on Tombstone Canyon.

Let us know before December 9th if
•You are interested in this training
•Whether you prefer several short sessions or one long session
   •Issues you are interested in

Once we get an idea of how many of you are interested, whether you prefer short or long sessions and what issues are most important to you, we will start working with Dave on scheduling. There is no question that this will not start until after the holidays in January or later. Contact Doug at reiniger@wyoming.com or (520) 432-0307 or text (307) 690-6625 for your feedback, comments/suggestions/preferences.

Before the Hike

BEFORE THE HIKE: CPR/EMERGENCY FIRST AID TRAINING INFO
In view of the recent injury and the real possibility that someone else may be hurt on a Muleteam hike, we should explore getting some training for those who are interested. I have arranged for Dave Perry, Bisbee Fire/EMS to meet us on Saturday December 3 at 9:00am at the Courthouse. Dave is in charge of CPR and Emergency medical training. He will give us a short introduction to his program. We will put what we have learned on the Blogspot, see who is interested, and then work with Dave on a future day, time and place for the training. - Doug

HIKE UP MILLER CANYON TO THE HOLENSTEIN MINE
Join the Muleteam on Saturday December 3rd for a hike up the Miller Canyon trail in the Huachuca Mountains to the old Holenstein Mine. The mine dates back to the 1880’s with little ore produced. The trail has a little of everything: some easy footing and some rocky uphill, for a roundtrip of about 5 miles and an elevation gain of approximately 1,450 feet. Dogs welcome on leash (Wilderness Area rules). Bring water, lunch and poles if you like. Meet at the Old Bisbee courthouse  fountain at 9am. Carpool if you wish. For more details contact Sandy at slajudice@yahoo.com or 520-353-5124.

ALTERNATE DECEMBER 3rd ACTIVITY: SAN PEDRO BEAVER SURVEY

Muleteam regular Mike Foster (sarjuesos@gmail.com) is very involved in the AZ Watershed Management Group and is promoting a Bi-National San Pedro Beaver Survey. If you're interested, contact Mike. He has a lot more information, including a virtual orientation and training on December 1st at 6:00-7:00pm.

Come search for signs of beavers all while taking in the beautiful views the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (SPRNCA) has to offer. Be a part of a team in a bi-national effort to further understand beaver activity in Southern Arizona and Sonora, Mexico. We are looking for volunteers to join us in hiking along and in the San Pedro River for several miles in search of beaver activity such as beaver dams, lodges, and chews. Additionally, we are looking for assistance shuttling the volunteers from the survey endpoints back to their vehicles. The 2022 U.S. Beaver Survey will occur on Saturday, December 3rd from 9:00Aam to 4:00pm

Your efforts will help us determine where and how many beavers have taken up residence in the San Pedro and its tributaries! For more information and to sign up, please visit the Watershed Management group website at:

BACKTRACK - Mule Mtn Ridge / Injury
Deb Van Schaak led the hike last Saturday with 19 people. Halfway on the desert trail and about 2 miles from a road Jayne Powell fell and broke her ankle.

Deb's update:
It was a long day, but what cool heads and wonderful teamwork everyone displayed. I heard more than one comment from the Search and Rescue team about how well the Muleteam handled the accident, so thank you.
I wanted to give you all an update on Jayne's broken ankle, along with contact info if you'd like to reach out to her. Jayne was transported by helicopter directly to Tucson. She broke not just one, but three (!) bones in her ankle and it was determined she'd need surgery. The surgery didn't happen until Sunday, so she spent a second night in the hospital and returned home yesterday. The surgery went well, but she'll have to be non-weight bearing on that foot for 10-12 weeks.
Last night I spoke with Sara (who was with Jayne in Tucson) and texted Jayne. Jayne expressed her gratitude to the Muleteam, ending with "y'all are a wonderful group of people and I feel like I made some more lifelong friends up on the mountain. Helluva way to do it though!". She'll be in Bisbee for at least two more weeks, and calls, texts, snail mail, and visits would be appreciated. And lastly, Jayne would appreciate any pictures you might have of the rescue. Here's her contact info:

Mule Mtn Ridge

RIDGE TRAIL COUNTERSPIN
Join the Muleteam this Saturday November 19 and hike the Bisbee "Counterspin" high on the ridge trail above Bisbee. We'll start by walking up Tombstone Canyon before accessing the ridge trail via Locklin Ave. Once at the trail junction we'll hang a left toward Juniper Flats and then a right at the 3-way trail intersection and down into Zacatecas Canyon. This stretch of the ridge trail provides stunningly wild views! Once in the canyon, hikers will have a chance to choose their own way home, either by completing the loop via the City Trail, or meandering through the streets of Bisbee. The total distance is roughly 4.5 miles, with about 1,000 feet elevation gain. Bring water and a snack, we'll be back by lunchtime. Dogs are welcome. Meet at 9 am on Saturday by the old Bisbee courthouse fountain to start the hike. Free. For more information, contact Deb at (802)777-1499 or debvanschaack@gmail.com.

BACKTRACK - Perimeter trail
We were 10 on the Perimeter Hike today, and we still couldn’t keep together!  It was a cool, sunny beautiful day and some zoomed ahead while others took it slowly.  We managed, though, to eventually rendezvous at the top.  My eternal question about this hike remains: why does it always feel so much longer on the way back?  Answer me that, dear universe.  - Laura

BACKTRACK - Brown Canyon
13 of us, both new and regular hikers strolled along Brown Canyon with dramatic golden leaves of the sycamore trees. We stopped at the water trough for the group photo. WALK THE BROWN CANYON TRAIL
Join the Muleteam this Saturday November 5th for a hike through a unique and scenic wooded canyon (with fall colors if we’re lucky) in the Huachuca Mountains of Sierra Vista. This trail is well-marked and moderately difficult with a mix of some uphill sections through the forest, following a running creek making a roundtrip of about 6 miles. Bring water and lunch. Back mid-afternoon. Meet Nov 5 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool or join us at 10:00am at Brown Canyon Ranch in Sierra Vista. For more details contact Larry at larryjmilam@gmail.com.

The ride to the trailhead at Brown Canyon Ranch (off Ramsey Road/Route 92) is about 45 minutes from the Courthouse. There is a day-use fee of $8 per vehicle, which is waived for holders of National Park Passes (Annual, Senior, Military). Gas donation to carpool drivers is appreciated.

BACKTRACK - Fire hike
A group of 23 hikers and one dog enjoyed a beautiful Arizona blue-sky day for a 4 mile hike up to the Ridge and down the Locklin Trail. Before we got moving, Doug gave us a good overview of Muleteam history and practices (nobody gets left behind!), and we discussed safe hiking practices in the Mule Mountains (stay on the trails, hike in groups). Along the way, we reviewed some photos from the 2021 ZacAttack Fire, which burned 30 acres from Brewery Gulch up to the Ridge (stopped thanks to air-dropped fire retardant), and the 4/25/2022 Locklin Fire, which burned 112 acres above Locklin canyon -- both came closer to homes than was comfortable.

Photos below are at the same location, soon after the Locklin fire 4-30-2022 and now.

We shared some before-and-after shots which showed how our grasslands have re-grown since the fires, but which also reminded us that we live in a wildfire-prone area. (Shameless plug: if you are interested in learning more about living in wildfire country, go to https://www.oldbisbeefirewise.org/ or find Old Bisbee Firewise on Facebook.) Thanks to a great group of hikers; I'm looking forward to more outings with you this year -- Lindsay

P.S. Those with strong constitutions saw photos of a dead mountain lion at the site where it was discovered (within the Locklin Trail check-dams) this past September. (Arizona Game and Fish retrieved the body the day it was found.) Don't hike alone! -- L

23rd Season

23rd ANNUAL MULETEAM HIKING SEASON STARTS OCTOBER 29TH

The Muleteam is our local Bisbee hiking group that hikes every Saturday from late October to early May. It’s an informal group with no official membership, meetings or dues. Everyone is welcome to show up at the County Court House by the “Iron Man” statue any Saturday at 9:00AM. We have a core group of local hikers (some regulars going back 20 years) but are happy when short-term visitors and seasonal renters join the hike. It’s a great opportunity to meet people with similar interest in hiking and exploring the beautiful trails of Southern Cochise County.

Muleteam hikes are not races. There is usually a range of endurance and styles among our hikers, but we go at a reasonable pace, make sure not to let anyone fall behind, take frequent breaks and sit together for a long lunch break. Our hikes average 4-7 miles, and there is a very wide range of difficulty, from casual river walks to going to the summit of Miller Peak, at 9,000 feet the highest mountain in the Huachuca’s. Everyone is free to only go on hikes that make sense to them. Every week is different, and it’s fun when new people show up, but there’s no pressure to go on any hike. We don’t take attendance.

Everything you need to know about the Muleteam is on-line at muleteam.blogspot.com.  It has the hike calendar for the whole season, description of upcoming hikes and past hikes, plus ongoing notices. There is also advance notice of the next Saturday hike, with a description, in the weekly edition of the Bisbee Observer.

HIKE LEADERS NEEDED

We have 28 hike dates scheduled this season, from October 29, 2022 to May 6, 2023.

It is crucially important that we get people to volunteer to lead a hike. The calendar below has all 28 hiking Saturdays between October 29, 2022 to May 6, 2023. Scroll below for an incredible detailed description of all 100+ Muleteam hikes since 2000. You don’t have to be a hard-core hiker to lead one (or more) of these hikes-or one of your favorite hikes.

WE NEED HIKE LEADERS NOW FOR EVERY DAY OF THE SEASON. IN THE PAST, WE DIDN’T FILL DATES AND HAD TO CANCEL HIKES. WE CAN’T LET THAT HAPPEN THIS SEASON. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS WELL IN ADVANCE.

Doug Reiniger, a 20 year Muleteam veteran, has agreed to be in charge of recruitment of Trip Leaders. Please contact him at reiniger@wyoming.com or phone/text (307) 690-6625

HIKE UP MILLER CANYON TO THE HOLENSTEIN MINE
Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a hike up the Miller Canyon trail to the old Holenstein Mine. The mine dates back to the 1880's with little ore produced. An interesting note I discovered—"the existence of a road up Miller Canyon to the mine and the presence of a large ore bin are inconsistent infrastructure for the size of the workings, indicating a possible stock scheme!" The trail has a little of everything, some easy footing and some rocky uphill for a roundtrip of about 5 miles and an elevation gain of approximately 1,450 feet. Dogs welcome on leash (wilderness area rules). Bring water, lunch, and poles if you like.

From the Pass there will be another 3 or 4 miles on well-maintained dirt road to a turnoff onto a more primitive road, which will become impassable to the average passenger car after about a half mile. Cars will be parked there, and hiking will commence first along the road and then a trail after the road disappears.

The trail head is accessed on a 2.5 mile dirt road through Ash Canyon - 4 wheel drive not needed. The trail has been damaged by floods following the Monument Fire in 2011 with a few rocky washed out areas. Lots of historic remnants - a very large 2-cylinder gasoline engine, air compressor for pneumatic drills, the mill site for the mine and the walls of a stone cabin.  -Richard

Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a hike in the foothills of the Huachuca Mountains beginning in Ash Canyon. MORE FROM GUILLERMO
The Elenita Mountain Peak hiking is a strenuous 5 mile round trip. The hiking starts at 6404ft above sea level at “Don Ricardo Mine” which is an old abandoned mine.  The hiking goes through a glen for about half mile then we take an old dirt road which will drive us to the Peak (8156ft). Elenita Mountain Peak is located at (30°59.167N  110°23.302W). Elenita Mountain is a heavily covered pine tree mountain. It’s a beautiful place and has beautiful views to all its surroundings. I recommend carrying warm clothes and plenty of water. If there’s no “bad boys” in the vicinity, we could come back through an alternative route which is more beautiful and natural (no dirt road) than the way up. You could leave your cars at the Instituto Tecnologico (the school) and then carpool the trail head which is at 9 miles away from the school.  -Guillermo

La Catalina was once a small ranch area at the beginning of 1900s. Some ruins are still found there, including a copper mine concentrator facility. La Catalina has a dirt road which communicates to La Turquesa highland. This road will be used to hike outbound to La Turquesa and return to the car parking spot. Outbound will have a detour that will be taken to a hiking trail to La Turquesa. La Turquesa is a highland region known for its turquoise mining activity. La Turquesa is a small – scale subterranean mining area. Most turquoise mining is drilled and extracted by sacks. After cleaning and processing, turquoise stone is exported to USA.
