Florida Canyon

HIKE FLORIDA CANYON
Join the Muleteam this Saturday at the earlier time of 8am for a hike to the Florida Saddle in the Santa Rita Mountains. The hike is about 4.8 miles one way, an "in and out" hike which allows some hikers the potential to stop anywhere along the way and admire the gorgeous views while waiting for the main group to return. An added attraction for those willing is a short 1 mile hike from the saddle up to McCleary Peak itself (8356'). The trails in this range are very well maintained and easy to negotiate. Bring liquids and food for snacks and lunch. Back late afternoon. Meet Mar 2 at 8am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool. Free, but gas donation is appreciated. For more details contact Steve at 432-7770 or sss@theriver.com.

Notes from Steve:
The drive to the trailhead takes 14 minutes longer than the drive to Portal and less than that to any of the trailheads near Portal that are routine Muleteam hikes. 1hour 48min. The drive takes one thru several beautiful canyons, awe inspiring rock formations etc. High clearance vehicles NOT needed.

From the summit of McCleary peak, innumerable basin-and-range mountain ranges are visible, including the Santa Catalina Sky Island. Nearby neighboring peaks “88 Mac” and Mount Wrightson, highpoint of the Santa Ritas, dominate views to the south. The Whipple Observatory is clearly visible on the summit of Mount Hopkins. Baboquivari proudly rises to the southwest and ultra-prominence peak Mount Graham is visible to the north-northeast.

BACKTRACK - Joe's Canyon
Six hardy hikers who hardly knew what they were doing hiked up Joe’s Canyon to the crest and back. The trail was 90% snow covered. Some brave soul had tramped a path before us. It was cold yet sunny. By the time we headed back the trial was getting wet as our soaked socks confirmed. Views from the crest into Mexico were awesome. Joe’s Canyon was named after some poor prospector who died of a snake bite according to Leonard Taylor in his Trials of the Huachucas. We did not see any snakes. -Joe Graca

I took the group photo (what a cute bunch), and a few more are at muleteam.shutterfly.com.

Joe's Canyon

HIKE JOE'S CANYON TRAIL
Join the Muleteam this Saturday to hike from the Coronado Visitor Center through a very scenic valley in the Huachuca Mountains to Coronado Peak for a view of Mexico. This is a continuous uphill trail returning down the same way for a total of about 6.5 miles. Bring water and lunch but no dogs. Back mid-afternoon. Meet Feb 23 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool. Free, but gas donation is appreciated. For more details contact Joe at Joseph@rekindleyoursoul.com or 320-282-8857.

BACKTRACK - Cochise Stronghold
The full Cochise Stronghold hike, one way from either the west side or east to the opposite side, did not take place for a couple of reasons. Instead, 13 hikers went in from the East Side and back the same way. We stopped for lunch at a viewpoint about one half mile from the summit. After lunch and the photo opportunity, some hikers went on to the summit for a brief and windy visit. The other hikers proceeded back to the east side trailhead.
Four hikers went in and back from the west side. Despite windy conditions it was an enjoyable day, as the trail is one of the most scenic in the Dragoons. -Molly

A passing hiker took the group photo (of 15), and a couple more are at muleteam.shutterfly.com.
Elizabeth's 360º photo is at rebrand.ly/Stronghold.

SIDETRACK - Camping?
We need to schedule the camping trip soon before the calendar is full. Chiricahua National Monument is a strong possibility. Any other suggestions?

Cochise Stronghold

HIKE COCHISE STRONGHOLD
Join the Muleteam this Saturday to hike the entire Cochise Stronghold trail. We will divide in half and begin the hike from the east and west sides, exchange car keys in the middle and continue to the opposite side for a return shuttle. (OPTION: If some members of the group decide they would rather hike one way in and out, they can do that and not exchange keys.) This is a beautiful area with  hillside rock formations, a deep valley and a pond midway. It's a clear, moderate trail about 5 miles total with some uphill. Bring water and lunch. Back late afternoon. Meet Feb 16 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool (about 90 minutes each way). Free, but gas donation is appreciated. For more details contact Molly at 432-3902 or eeo.source@gmail.com.

It’s O.K. to make arrangements with particular other drivers in advance that you might want to exchange keys with, but it’s not required, as we can work that out the morning of the hike.

BACKTRACK - Oversite Canyon
Colder and cloudier weather than forecast made for a marginally gloomy mood among the 11 hikers and two dogs who faced the challenge of the Oversight Canyon trail in the SW Huachucas. Continually deteriorating condition of the trail due to disuse and poor maintenance joined the expected steady upgrade up the canyon, in slowing the hike to where 7 hikers decided to have lunch and return instead of ascending the switchbacks climbing out of the canyon, to lunch at the end of the mostly level ridge continuing on to the mountain crest. One hiker decided to turn back even before reaching the turnback spot for the 7 who continued on a little further. Lunch for the 4 who reached the ridge, was a windy and chilly affair before they headed back down as soon as they had enough nourishment to make the trip back. On the way back the hike was split into two main parties-- those who started back early and those who enjoyed the views from ridge. I made up the tail end, reaching the lower lunch spot about 5 to 10 minutes after two who decided not to wait-- all but Molly who observed what should be a routine Muleteam policy of making sure that the tail end of the hike should not be left to hike alone with no one else to come along in case of accident. Some parts of the switchback section out of the canyon have reached such a state of marginal discernability that I myself briefly lost the trail on the way back down, making for another 5 minute delay. To add to our disappointment was a lower flow of water in the creek than expected. Unlike the flows that we've also found farther up on earlier trips, only the section along where the Happy Jack cabin continues to fall into decay still had a brisk and gurgly flow among the thicket of green reeds found there. Apparently such a long, dry period preceded our recent precipitation since summer, that ground moisture still hasn't risen back up to a point where the creek begins flowing over more of its length. No photo was arranged at the Happy Jack spot where shots were taken on previous trips, after confidence was expressed-- later found to be misplaced-- that we SURELY would still all be together to take a group photo on the way back down. Famous last words, anyone? -Brad

Susan took the group photo, and Elizabeth took the 360º photo: rebrand.ly/Oversite.

Oversite Canyon

HIKE OVERSITE CANYON
Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a wooded hike in the SW Huachuca Mountains, about 7 miles total-- steep on last stretch to lunch on scenic ridge one mile short of Crest Trail junction. Lunch before climb optional for some. Back the same way. Trail is along a spring-fed stream past the old Happy Jack cabin and an old mine site beyond. Bring water and lunch. Back late afternoon. Meet Feb  9 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool. Free, but gas donation is appreciated. For more details contact Brad at 432-2476 or bradward.j3@juno.com.

Trailhead info
Drive to the trailhead will be on paved road until reaching the switchback climb to Montezuma Pass in the Coronado National Memorial. From the Pass there will be another 3 or 4 miles on well-maintained dirt road to a turnoff onto a more primitive road, which will become impassable to the average passenger car after about a half mile. Cars will be parked there, and hiking will commence first along the road and then a trail after the road disappears.

BACKTRACK - Mule Ridge
Four dogs and 16 hikers enjoyed dog weather (cloudy and cool) in a climb up the Zacatecas Trail. The Trail was much improved from early this hiking season by persons unknown who repaired water damage. At the Saddle, we went west along the Ridge until we headed back east to join the Locklin Trail for our trip down. It was nice to be joined by new hikers and to see longtime hikers Diane and Wendell again. -John B.

I took the photo on the windy ridge, and other Muleteam photos are at muleteam.shutterfly.com.
