Brown Canyon

WALK THE BROWN CANYON TRAIL

Join the Muleteam this Saturday November 4th for a hike through a unique and scenic wooded canyon (with fall colors if we’re lucky) in the Huachuca Mountains of Sierra Vista. This trail is well-marked and moderately difficult with a mix of some uphill sections through the forest, following a running creek making a roundtrip of about 6 miles. Bring water and lunch. Back mid-afternoon. Meet Nov 4 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool or join us at 10am at Brown Canyon Ranch in Sierra Vista.

The ride to the trailhead at Brown Canyon Ranch (off Ramsey Road/Route 92) is about 45 minutes from the Courthouse. There is a day-use fee of $8 per vehicle, which is waived for holders of National Park Passes (Annual, Senior, Military). Gas donation to carpool drivers is appreciated. For more info email Laura at mssmithlg@aol.com or call her at (206) 715-6589.

BACKTRACK - Ridge Loop
It was perfect weather for 17 people and the first hike of the season. Bisbee soon disappeared as we hiked down Zacatecas and up to the ridge trail to do the loop back around. Great views, and a first time hike for some people. The breeze was nice and the grass was turning orange. We took this photo before the group got scattered, and almost everyone met back at Carol's house for a relaxing potluck. A good start for the new season.  - Larry

Hiking update

Hello, All
Thanks to Carol, Sandy & Susan for quickly volunteering to lead hikes on Oct 28, Nov 11 & Nov 25. Every hike needs time in advance to get a final description and notice to include in our blogspot and local newspaper, so it's important that we fill the calendar soon.

In our case, we REALLY need a volunteer to lead the November 4th hike and almost as urgent is our need for a November 18th leader. PLEASE look at your calendars and think about a hike you'd be willing to lead on one of those two dates.

Beyond that, we have NO volunteers for any day for the rest of the season- Dec 2 to May 18-so think about your favorite hike and pick a date.
Thanks,
Doug

SIDETRACK - Cinque Terre, Italy
There is a national park on the coast of Italy that includes five traffic-free villages connected by train, ferry and many mountainous hiking trails. I was there 3 weeks and recommend it if you'd like a beautiful walking holiday. A link to my trip photos... Cinque Terre.  - Larry

The courthouse fountain is repaired and flowing again for the new hiking season.

24th Season Begins

2023-2024 MULETEAM SEASON STARTS ON OCTOBER 28TH

The Muleteam is our local Bisbee hiking group that has been having Saturday hikes from late October to early May every year since 2000. It’s an informal group with no organization, meetings or dues. Anyone is welcome to show up at the County Court House any Saturday at 9:00AM (with some early departures). We have a core group of diverse hikers (some regulars going back 20 years) but are happy to have short-term visitors and seasonal renters. Many great friendships have been made by meeting people with similar interest in hiking and exploring the beautiful lands of Southern Cochise County.

Muleteam hikes are not races. There is always a range of endurance and styles among our hikers, but we go at a reasonable pace, make sure not to let anyone fall too far behind, take frequent breaks and sit together for a long lunch break. Our hikes average 4-7 miles, and there is a very wide range of difficulty, from casual river walks to going to the summit of Miller Peak, at 9,000 feet the highest mountain in the Huachucas.

There is advance notice of every hike, with a detailed description. Needless to say, we each only go on hikes that make sense to us. Every week is different, and it’s fun when new people show up. Larry Milam has been the overall leader and organizer for over 15 years. Everything anyone needs to know about the Muleteam is on line at muleteam.blogspot.com.  That has the hike calendar for the whole season, description upcoming hikes and past hikes (with photos), plus ongoing notices.

It is crucially important that we get people to volunteer to lead a hike. The blogspot will have the calendar for all hiking Saturdays between October 28, 2023 to May 11, 2024. You don’t have to be a hard-core hiker to lead one (or more) of these hikes-or one of your favorite hikes. Our past hikes were a very wide range of locations, distance from Old Bisbee, difficulty, and environment. WE NEED HIKE LEADERS NOW TO VOLUNTEER WELL IN ADVANCE FOR EVERY SATURDAY OF THE SEASON. IF WE DON’T HAVE A LEADER WE HAVE TO CANCEL HIKES. PLEASE DON’T LET THAT HAPPEN.

Doug Reiniger, a 20+ year Muleteam veteran, is in charge of recruitment of Trip Leaders. Please contact him at reiniger@wyoming.com or phone/text (307) 690-6625 or call local land-line at (520) 432-0307 to volunteer to lead a hike.
