BACKTRACK - Miller Peak
Five hikers enjoyed lovely vistas while traversing the ridgeline of the southernmost range of the Huachucas.  The weather was cool and breezy, perfect for a long, strenuous hike up to Miller peak.  Three hikers reached the peak and were awed by the 360 degree view of Cochise County and Mexico.  Cananea stockpile, Parker Lake, Dragoon and Mount Wrightson were visible on the horizon.  The three hikers that made it to the peak arrived back just in time to watch a beautiful sunset accompanied with a large hawk floating stationary in the air currents and then suddenly taking a sharp dive right after the sun went down. - Carol

BACKTRACK - Parker Canyon Lake
It may get a little boring and repetitive when we go on about how great Muleteam hikes are, but April 20th brought out the best of our 24 years in every way. The weather was perfect with warm blue skies and a mild breeze. The lake was a joy to see with many families boating, fishing and having a great time. Most importantly, we had 17 people joining us with almost half newcomers, a wonderful experience to be joined by new friends. As a great reward, most of us topped the day off with a well-earned visit to the Hops and Vines winery in Sonoita for an hour of wine-tasting and relaxation. Did I say this was a perfect day?  - Doug

Parker Lake

PARKER CANYON LAKE HIKE & WINE TASTING
Join the Muleteam this Saturday April 20th for a scenic hike around the shores of one of the few lakes in the Sonoita area. This is an easy hike, about 5 miles round trip on a mostly flat trail in a natural setting with and great views and (usually) ducks and herons. Bring water and lunch. After the hike there will be an optional wine tasting at Hops and Vines on Route 82 near Sonoita (which will have live music until 4:00pm). Meet April 20th at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool. This is a very scenic drive of about 1½ hours through beautiful country on the west side of the Huachucas. Free, but gas donation is appreciated. For more details contact Doug at 520-432-0307 or reiniger@wyoming.com.

BACKTRACK - Art Stairs
20 people did some obscure stairs and paths in the hills of Old Bisbee to see murals, mosaics, sculptures, interesting ruins and scenery. The weather was perfect, and only a few people got lost temporarily. A highlight was Tad's house and her Bill Mead mural where she took the group photo. Sharing this hike with friends and neighbors renewed our appreciation of the special place we live. We walked around and looked and took photos...and talked!  Fun morning with a fun group. - Larry

BACKTRACK - Picacho Peak
What a trip! Twelve campers and one dog met at Picacho Peak State Park to begin the weekend. The cold wind howled (and I mean howled!) all evening preventing a campfire and making the set-up of tents almost impossible. After some time and some helping hands, four tents were erected and three actually made it through the night without blowing down (sorry Jan). The wind didn't, however, prevent us from having a great potluck dinner and enjoying each other's company. It rained on and off overnight. Saturday was clear and sunny for our big hike.

It’s a nice feeling of accomplishment to be able to look at a landmark peak every time one heads to Casa Grande or points north and think, “I have stood at the pinnacle of that peak”. Nine of us now get to do that,  having hiked and rock scrambled up the Sunset Vista trail to Picacho Peak. Two other hikers had the pleasure of experiencing the real Arizona landscape with saguaros, and brittle brush and other wild flowers in bloom on part of the trail.

After lunch on the top, we took the Hunter Trail down from the summit and had the surprise of having a significant uphill portion, with some of the toughest cabled section terrain of the day. After that we reached what is referred to as the saddle before actually heading downhill on the trail on the east side of the peak. I am not sure if going up Sunset Vista and going down Hunter was the best way to do the hike, but it was nice to experience both trails. It was all beautiful as you will see from the photos.

After a fine dinner of potluck leftovers, we enjoyed a campfire complete with s'mores. We were treated with a spectacular view of the SpaceX launch to top off a great trip.  - Sandy & Molly

Picacho Peak

APRIL 5-7 - PICACHO PEAK CAMPOUT
Join the Muleteam for the annual spring campout at Picacho Peak State Park.  We have reserved the Roadrunner Group Area for camping, complete with a small ramada, picnic tables, fire rings and tent pads.  It’s an easy walk to the restrooms/showers and water.  There will be an early potluck dinner Friday night.  Some things to know:

-Entrance/camping fee is $15 per vehicle per night.  The first three vehicles to arrive have been paid for (it's required) and the next three will have to pay there.  We'll work out the money exchange after everyone arrives.  If you are just coming Saturday for the day hike, the entrance fee is $7 per vehicle.

-Campers:  arrive at the campground anytime starting Friday at 2:00 p.m..  Let the people at the entrance know you are with the Roadrunner group.  We have the group site through Sunday morning.

-They allow a maximum of six vehicles at the group site.  For this reason carpooling is encouraged.  If there is a problem at the park entrance, call me!  (Too many rules!Emoji)

-Campers, RV’s, and trailers are not permitted in the group site.  If you plan on coming up in one of these you will need to reserve your own campsite (Loop C is very close, it’s where the restrooms are located), then join us for the festivities.  Make your own reservations and present at the entrance.

-Because of a water shortage, they have asked that we only fill individual water bottles.  For a gallon or more, please fill up and bring from home.

-Questions about the camping portion of this weekend can be directed to Sandy at 520-353-5124 or slajudice@yahoo.com

APRIL 6 - PICACHO PEAK HIKE
The plan is to ascend to Picacho Peak via the Sunset Vista Trail and descend on the Hunter Trail. The ascent will be approximately 3.1 miles and the descent will be approximately 1.6 miles (distances vary according to which information site is consulted).

Gloves are recommended for both ascent and descent as at times cables to grasp will be available. Poles are recommended, particularly for the descent which will be steep. Retractable poles that can be stored in your pack might be best so that you can use both hands to hold cables at times. At least twice as much water as you would use on a standard five mile hike is recommended. This may sound tough, and some of it is, but we managed to do it 10 years ago and found it enjoyable enough that we want to do it again. Dogs are not permitted beyond the saddle.

We will meet at the Roadrunner Group campground at 8:30 a.m. to drive to the Sunset Vista trailhead. Before that some of the campers will shuttle a car or two to the end point, the Hunter trailhead. At the end of the hike those cars will go back to the Sunset Trailhead for the vehicles left there in the morning.

For those coming just for the day:
The entrance fee will be $7.00 per car. Drive to the Roadrunner Group Camp Area and then we will carpool to the Sunset Trailhead. A map should be available at the entrance when you pay your fee. If not, the signage for the approximately 3 mile drive to the Roadrunner Group was sufficient as I  recall. Please arrive at the Roadrunner Group Camp area by 8:30 a.m.

Questions about the hike can be directed to Molly at 520-432-3902 or eeo.source@gmail.com

BACKTRACK - Hunter Canyon Loop
24 folks, including a 9-year-old and Kala the dog hiked through the Lower Hunter Canyon Loop on Saturday, March 30th.  We were treated by a sunny and warm (70’s) day and gusty winds.  More often than not we were protected from the breeze.  This was a fun four-mile loop of rolling hills and excellent views of the mountains and valleys.  Along the way we saw two Javelinas (or was it the same one twice?!?), a herd of ten deer and five mountain bikers.  Lunch was in an open area under the trees and protected from the wind.  The group had to stick close together due to the many turns and forks in the trail.  This loop is a popular mounting biking destination, and we were hiking on biking trials.  After lunch, a few hikers took a short cut back to the cars while the rest hiked on through the southern loop.  It was about a three-and-a-half-hour journey, and we were back to the cars early in the afternoon for the ride home. – Jim Poulin (rookie trip leader)

Hunter Canyon

HIKE LOWER HUNTER CANYON LOOP
Join the Muleteam this Saturday, March 30th for a relatively easy four-mile hike with rolling hills and a mix of sun and shade in Hunter Canyon in the Huachucas. We will begin on East Hunter Canyon Road – just off route 92 in Hereford. We will hike a loop around lower Hunter Canyon following trails, washes and mountain biking trails.  We will stop for lunch under a magnificent Cottonwood tree. There will be scenic views of the Huachucas, the Mules and the vast San Pedro Valley. Bring water, snacks & lunch. Dogs on leash are OK. Back early afternoon. Meet March 30th at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool and drive the 40 minutes to the Hunter Canyon Parking lot. For any questions, contact Jim at 802-355-4591 or jim.poulin@yahoo.com.

Alternatively, hikers may meet us at about 9:45am at the Hunter Canyon parking lot. Turn west off route 92 on East Hunter Canyon Road – there is no road sign, but Google Maps shows the road. It is a dirt road right where the four lanes on 92 drops to two lanes. Cross the cattle grate and park on the left.

April 5-7 - Picacho Peak Camp/hike
Start planning for the campout/hike at Picacho Peak State Park. Complete details will be posted next week, but here is the basic plan:
We have reserved the Roadrunner Group Area for tent camping and gathering. If you plan to stay in your RV or camper you cannot park at the group site. Reserve a spot in one of the loops (C is close). The park allows a maximum of six vehicles at Roadrunner, so carpooling is encouraged! Contact Sandy with camping questions at 520-353-5124 or slajudice@yahoo.com.
We will hike to Picacho Peak from the Sunset Vista Trailhead and descend on the Hunter Trail. The total length will be about 5.1 miles, some of it steep and challenging involving ladders and cable railing. Camping isn't required to hike if you can be at the campground by 8:30am. Contact Molly with hiking questions at 520-432-3902 or eeo.source@gmail.com.

BACKTRACK - Council Rocks
15 hikers were treated to an informative account of the native history surrounding Council Rocks by Charlie Onehorse.  Charlie graciously shared his ancestral interpretation behind the pictographs, gave us samples of food foraged from the surrounding land and invited us to join together with gratitude while we sang the Cherokee Morning Song.
12 hikers bravely ventured on through boulder jams and shin daggers to lunch in a wind sheltered rock grotto that had, yet, another small pictograph hidden under a boulder.  Afterwards, they scrambled over the saddle, crossed the creek bed to the footpath that led back to the parking area.  All arrived safe, but for a few bloody scratches due to bushwhacking through the white thorn acacia.  - Carol

SIDE'TRACK' - Gold Gulch Racetrack
In past years many of you have accompanied me on the hike I lead from Galena out to the old racetrack on Gold Gulch. I learned some interesting facts recently talking to some Bisbee old-timers. The track itself was constructed in the 1960s for racing cars on the outside oval and motorcycles on the snaky inside course. And yes, it was also used for demolition derbies.

As for the concrete slab where we eat lunch and which we have often wondered about: Apparently it is a remnant of Bisbee's first country club. Judging from this photo, I would say the location seems right. What I was told was that it was burned down by the Wobblies (Industrial Workers of the World) during the 1917 strike. If so, it's a site with a more significant history than I ever realized.  - Elizabeth

BACKTRACK - Riverside Hike and Picnic
This special event gets better every year. 23 Hikers and 2 dogs took advantage of the history and scenery and wonderful weather to share great food on the shore of the San Pedro for the 14th year in a row. The traditional long and relaxing lunch was topped off by a musical presentation of original music by Dawn on her ukulele, including a song praising the Muleteam. After packing up, we split into two groups-about one-third returning to the Fairbank Townsite the way be came, and the rest following the river and train tracks for an additional two miles and then joining our friends at the Townsite. - Doug

Fairbank

14th ANNUAL SAN PEDRO HIKE & PICNIC
Join the Muleteam this Saturday March 16th for a special relaxing and fun event: our 14th Annual Potluck Riverside Picnic along the San Pedro River. We start at the Historic Fairbank Townsite and walk along a flat and easy trail, first to see the 100+ year old cemetery and then mill ruins until we get to the river in only about 1½ miles. At the riverside, we spread out the tablecloths, put out the food and drinks and have a long, relaxing lunch. We ask that everyone bring some food or drink to share. Rumor has it that beer & wine have usually been smuggled in. All the plates, utensils and glasses will be provided. After lunch, everyone has the option to either return to Fairbank the way we came, or continue the longer loop route along the river (about 4 more miles). Meet March 16th at 9 am by the Old Bisbee courthouse, from which we can car pool to the Fairbank Townsite parking lot.

Alternatively, hikers may meet us at about 9:40am at Fairbank. The trip is about 40 minutes from Bisbee: Route 80 past Tombstone, left on Route 82 across from the Checkpoint for about 6 miles. Fairbank lot is on the right. For any questions, contact Doug at (520) 432-0307 or reiniger@wyoming.com.

BACKTRACK - Juniper Flats Road
The hike to the two tower complexes on the Juniper Flats Road began from Mule Pass with eight hikers and one dog. Two more hikers joined us on the way for a complete complement of 10 hikers. The tour was mostly uneventful, with skies that were clouding up but never got very threatening. They did block the sun, which made a cold breeze all the more noticeable, and most of all at the top where the last towers were situated and where we had lunch in scenic splendor. That was brought to an early halt by hikers without extra clothing who were followed at intervals by other hikers on their own or as couples.

There were only eight of us for lunch when two and their dog turned back after our group photo at the first tower complex. Other outdoor enthusiasts were seen but all were traveling in vehicles or had set up some camp spots along the road. An estimate of these were about three or four camps and about the same number of vehicles in motion. The leader was gratified to find that the group stayed together in relatively close proximity, neither spreading far apart or crowding into a tight bundle. The wide road allowed for hikers to choose between hiking side by side or ahead and behind, and various combinations were tried at random intervals. As expected, the pace back down was much faster, with the last two hikers arriving back at the Mule Pass starting point somewhere around 1:20 in the afternoon.    -- Brad

BACKTRACK - Guindani Trail
Though no dinosaur bones were found or jaguars sighted, there was a Rex who made a brief appearance on the saddle during lunch. But other than Rex, there were 15 hikers and 2 small dogs who made the hike under blue skies and a nice cooling breeze. Manzanita was blooming and the wash was running so we stepping-stoned over it at least 10 times. Much interest was shown for the interesting rocks and formations. The Whetstone Mountains are part of the basin and range wrinkling that goes as far south as Bisbee and was caused by the Pacific plate running into the continent.
“The Whetstones present a thick, southwest tilted array of Paleozoic and Cretaceous strata, the most complete such sequence in Southern Arizona. Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks occur at the south end of the range, the north end is Precambrian granite. Between the two are Cambrian, Ordovician, Devonian, Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and Permian rocks-layers of fossil-bearing marine limestone, sandstone and shale. The mustard-colored soils near the highway are derived from volcanic ash that is probably Oligocene in age.“ (Roadside Geology of Arizona, Halka Chronic)
At the end of the day though we were still up in the air about petrified wood or gneiss and though a bit of a drive from Bisbee, not a taxing or too long of a hike.  - Monica

BACKTRACK - Mt Ballard
24 intrepid hikers and Badger (the dog) set out to hike Mt. Ballard, at 7,370 feet the highest peak in the Mule Mountains. We had a gorgeous day and started hiking from the old Divide at 9:15 a.m. Mt. Ballard is a rather unrelenting uphill trek, fortunately loaded with great views along the way, and the group quickly spread out along the trail. I'm happy to report that all 24 of us made it to the summit, where we enjoyed snacks and/or early lunch and a group photo.  Three speedy hikers and Badger took off before all of us reached the top for Mt. Fissure, another peak down and up a bit from Mt. Ballard. One family headed on down the trail before the group photo, and we also missed two of the speedy hikers in the photo since they were still on Fissure, so if you're counting folks in the photo you'll see a few less than our total group.

After enjoying sun, food, and a photo at the summit we started the trek down. Two hikers peeled off to visit Mt. Fissure, and the rest of us continued on. I'm also happy to report that all 24 of us made it back down the trail incident-free, in spite of some rocky and steep spots! After the hike Dave invited us all to his place at the top of the Divide for drinks, and about half of us enjoyed cooling off in the shade with cold beverages for an hour or so before heading home. All in all another great Muleteam hike!    ~Deb

Mt Ballard

MULETEAM ASCENDS MOUNT BALLARD
Join the Muleteam this Saturday to hike to the highest point in the Mule Mountains, west of the "Divide" with outstanding views of Bisbee, Mexico, and the Huachuca Mountains. This is a fairly difficult hike on a natural path with a steep rocky section. The total distance round trip is only 3.5 miles, but includes an elevation gain of 1,300 feet. Bring water and snacks or lunch. Back early afternoon. Free. Dogs welcome, but be aware that there is lots of cholla along the narrow trail.

Meet February 24 at 9 a.m. by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain, from which we will carpool up Tombstone Canyon Road to West Blvd. up to the Divide. Alternatively, hikers may head straight for the Divide and wait there. For more details contact Deb at (802)777-1499 or debvanschaack@gmail.com.

BACKTRACK - Sandoval Cross
The weather couldn't have been better for a lovely hike to the Sandoval Family Cross. Our numbers grew and shrank a bit on the way through town, but fourteen hikers and one dog made their way to this little-visited cross via Laura's Loop. From the plaque at the base: "This cross was erected in 1918 by the Sandoval family to help celebrate the day of the cross, which is the 3rd day of May. Friends and neighbors prayed here for many years. The Sandoval family moved to Los Angeles on or about 1927." Our numbers flexed on the way back through town as some stopped for bread and one said he was continuing his hike unless there was a dance party planned. (There wasn't; next time!) -- Lindsay

Sandoval Cross

VISIT THE SANDOVAL FAMILY CROSS
Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a hike to this infrequently visited cross (not one of the shrines on Chihuahua Hill/"B Mountain"). Our less-than-5-mile-route will begin at the fountain below the County Courthouse at 9 a.m.; we'll wind through town and head up to Laura's Loop, then detour to and from the cross. (This 1/4-mile section includes some light bushwhacking and a bit of scrambling; roll-y rocks are a factor here and on the Loop.) Return via Zacatecas Canyon and through town in time for lunch. Bring water and a snack; well-behaved dogs welcomed. Questions? Text Lindsay at 954-770-2221

BACKTRACK - Boquillas Ranch
The hike on the San Pedro Trail was called off due to inclement weather. Two die hard hikers showed up at the Ironman and were informed of the decision. The roads were slippery and the snow falling hard. See everyone for next week’s hike. - Ken

San Pedro

HIKE BEYOND THE LITTLE BOQUILLAS RANCH
Join the Muleteam this Saturday February 10th for a hike on the San Pedro Trail south of the Fairbank Schoolhouse. We will pass the Little Boquillas Ranch, then eventually branch off to visit the old car relic and have lunch by the river. On the way back feel free to explore the ranch. The hike is approximately 7 miles roundtrip on an old dirt road with minor elevation changes. Bring water and lunch. Back mid-afternoon. Meet Feb 10 at 9am by the Old Bisbee Courthouse fountain to carpool. Free. Dogs welcome. For more information contact Ken at 520-432-9152 or kenheusman@yahoo.com.

For drivers planning to meet at the trailhead, meet around 9:45am. Head north from Bisbee on Route 80, past Tombstone and left at SR82 opposite the Border Checkpoint for about 6 miles and enter the parking lot across the road from the Fairbank Schoolhouse on SR82 (by the corrals).

BACKTRACK - Miller Canyon
14 hikers and 2 dogs hiked along lower Miller through the trees and along the running stream. We then hopped the road and up to Miler Canyon trail to the remains of the town of Palmerlee and the ruins of an old saw mill that made for a great place for a lunch spot, bordering a small creek. What started out as a chilly day turned into a beautiful day for hiking the 4.45 round trip.
See link to Palmerlee below. Thanks to Sandy for finding this link.  - Jan

Miller Canyon

HIKE MILLER CANYON
Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a hike through lower Miller Canyon, a scenic wooded valley in the Huachuca Mountains. The trail has some water in the stream from snow mountain runoff. From lower Miller, we will hop the road and head up upper Miller for less than a mile and have a snack or lunch by the ruins of an old town (Parmerlee??). This is a very easy hike with a 5 mile round trip. Bring water and lunch. Dogs on  leashes ok. Back early afternoon. Meet 9am February 3 by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool. Free, but gas donation is appreciated. For more details contact Jan 704-299-6614 or bolduc03@aol

SV people or others can meet on Miller Canyon Road, in large dirt parking on the left with restrooms.

BACKTRACK - China Camp
14 hikers and two dogs gathered at the courthouse for the China Camp hike, a number which was quickly reduced to one dog after a loud fracas ensued between the dogs. One hiker joined the carpool at the Middlemarch Road and Hwy 80 intersection, out of two which were expected to join us there. Another hiker showed up at the parking location which was unerringly found without any uncertainty along the edge of Middlemarch Road. A deceptive pattern of roads at the parking location led the leader to clarify his dim memory of where the correct road was when last visited over 6 years before, by choosing what appeared to be the more heavily used of the roads seen.  When no one spoke up to object, the hike started out but was briefly delayed when the road quickly came to an end. This resulted in one faction taking advantage of the delay to widely spread out the party and keep it widely spread out not only to China Camp but all the way back as well-- behavior which did not serve the safety factor involved in hiking as a group instead of as solitary individuals.

On reaching the location of the remains of old China Camp, a campsite of tents was found among the old concrete foundations, and one truck with empty horse trailer was seen to be the only conveyance that the campers had in reaching the location. The transport must have left soon after we did and passed us by on the way back down the road during our return. We never did learn why a large empty horsetrailer was chosen to haul the campers and gear, instead of something more suitable for the extraordinarily rough road. Near the spot where we stopped for our lunch at the China Camp site, there were some watery mudholes and clearer pools among the rocks to show what is indicated on maps to be the site of either a spring-- or a well on some maps. No one seemed to be in the mood to look around for a well or some more reliable water source consistent with what was remembered from the earlier visit by the leader. One of the hikers decided to go on alone in the direction of China Peak but with an intention of doing whatever unfolded as opportunity revealed itself. The rest of us started out in separate small clusters for the uneventful hike back. The entire group came back together for a second time, closely gathered for the group photo at the end of the hike, which gave an impression of close conviviality. ---  Brad

China Camp

HIKE TO CHINA CAMP
Join the Muleteam this Saturday, January 27th, for a hike in the Dragoon Mountains on an old mining road with wonderful views. This hike will be moderate uphill to the camp ruins and down the same way for a little more than 5 miles total. Bring water and lunch. Dogs welcome. Back late afternoon. Meet January 27 at 9am by the Old Bisbee Courthouse fountain to carpool (over an hour each way). Free, but gas donation is appreciated. For more details contact Brad at (520) 432-2476 or bradward.j3@juno.com.

For hikers who want more background, the primitive and barely driveable forest road to the camp ruins is FR 697 leaving from the Middlemarch Road, FR 345, at an unmarked spot with an open area for vehicle parking, which should accommodate about half a dozen. There is a break in the fence along the road, through which vehicles are easily driven to reach the parking. This open area is about 1 3/4 miles on Middlemarch Road beyond where the road to the Slavin Gulch TH, FR 687, branches off from the Middlemarch Road. The setting for old China Camp is a small wooded bowl with a spring, concrete foundations, and a small canyon draining the bowl from the spring down. The bowl is entered through a major road cut of greater size than the old road merits today.

BACKTRACK - Patio Peak
We had a total of 13 hikers and one dog braving the dreaded Patio Peak trail.  It is dreaded because of the steep, rocky trail and confusing footpaths. This leader made an effort to mark the trail prior to the hike, but none the less had two intersection that proved challenging. The temperature was perfect and the sky cloudy.  Two hikers went part way and 11 made it to the summit where we lunched on the patio (ok, not really a patio but a very small slab of concrete). We enjoyed a good workout and good company.  - Sandy

HIKE TO PATIO PEAK (a.k.a. BEER CAN HILL)
Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a local hike from Yuma Trail in Warren through Gold Gulch and by Gold Hill to a distinctive peak in the southern Mule Mountains. The hike goes up and down trails and an old mining road. Total distance is about 6.4 miles with a challenging uphill, rocky section and 1200 ft. elevation gain. Have lunch by the “patio” on top and enjoy a view of Bisbee from a different angle. Dogs welcome. Bring water and poles if you use them. Free. Back mid afternoon.
Meet at the old Bisbee courthouse fountain January 20 by 9:00 a.m. to carpool or follow to the trailhead. For more information contact Sandy at 520-353-5124 or slajudice@yahoo.com.

BACKTRACK - Slavin Gulch
Nice weather and spectacular views made for a great hike. One canine companion, Badger, accompanied 16 humans up and back along Slavin Gulch. Hikers saw a small sample of rock art hidden on the under face of a large boulder near the trail and attempted to land small stones on the top of another large boulder before passing onward towards the mine site. A few hikers braved climbing up the steep slope along an old wooden mine sluice where interesting minerals were littered in the mine waste.  - Carol
