When I moved to Bisbee in 2000 Yvonne Grimm was starting this hiking group, and Charles Marie was leading most of the weekly hikes. I just heard that Charles died peacefully Friday, June 20, so I wanted to remember him here. He introduced many of us to most of the wonderful, local trails that we still hike these days. Thank you, Charles. - Larry
Hiking in the area around Bisbee AZ since 2000, the Muleteam is a bunch of unique individuals. We hike each Saturday from the end of October to mid May, and various hike leaders offer a wide range of hikes averaging 4-7 miles roundtrip. Anyone is invited to join us, but each hiker is responsible for their own safety and comfort.

W Tombstone & Potluck
The last hike of this season features 3 - 3.5 miles of streets, stairs and trails around west Tombstone Canyon. Perhaps this off-the-beaten-path route will include some stairs you have not explored or at least do not visit often! We will conclude at 426 Garden Ave. for our shared covered dish lunch around 11-11:30. You are welcome to just show up for lunch.
Meet Saturday, May 3 at 9:00 a.m. at Old Bisbee Courthouse fountain to carpool to 426 Garden Ave. (just up Tombstone Canyon beyond Circle K) to drop off food for the covered dish lunch. Parking for several cars is available in the back of the house. Bring water for hiking, your shared dish, beverage of choice, and hiking poles (if desired). Leashed dogs are welcome. Questions? Call Susan at 610-220-5287.
South Perimeter
Join the Muleteam this Saturday, April 26th, for a hike along the winding foothills of the Huachuca Mountains between Hunter and Miller Canyons with vista views of the San Pedro Valley. This hike is similar to the North Perimeter Trail from Carr to Miller, only the hills are more gradual. Lunch will be at the same spot as the North Perimeter Trail hike on a little peak overlooking the San Pedro Valley. It will be about a 7 mile round trip hike (3 miles to the Miller Road parking lot and half a mile to the little peak for lunch). Meet at 9am at the Bisbee Courthouse fountain. Bring water and lunch. Dogs are welcome. Back by mid-afternoon. For more details, contact Ed at 313-204-2119 or erex66@gmail.com.
Rucker Update
Almost every year the Muleteam hosts a weekend campout and hike. This year the location is Rucker Canyon in the Chiricahuas. This is an overnight campout Friday and optional Saturday night. The camping location is at the Rucker Forest Camp, which no longer has facilities/toilets, but there are lovely tent sites and dispersed camping areas along the road and beyond the Jersey Barriers near the trailhead.
Directions: Take Route 80 East towards Douglas, then Route 191 N to right on N Rucker Canyon Road. Turn left onto E Rucker Canyon Road. Walnut Canyon Grove Campground will be on the left and the Rucker Ranger Fire Station is on the right. The dirt road is approximately 19 miles to the very end.
Hike Only: For those just coming for the Saturday hike without camping, carpooling is recommended, meet Saturday at the courthouse fountain at 8AM.

Art Stairs
Join the Muleteam this Saturday to explore some unique outside art (murals, mosaics, sculpture...) by way of Bisbee's most interesting stairs. Be prepared to climb at a reasonable pace with planned stops for less than 4 miles. Bring water, lunch and maybe a camera, but no dogs. Back about noon or drop out when you want. Meet April 12 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to begin the hike. Free. For more details contact Larry 520-224-4951 or larryjmilam@gmail.com.
Parker Lake
Turkey Pen
Join the Muleteam on March 29th for a hike on the Turkey Pen Trail, one of the easier trails close to Bisbee in the Chiricahuas. The trail begins on Turkey Creek Road and ends at Rock Creek at Fitch corral. About halfway it passes the very scenic Fife Canyon trail. This is a moderate 3.14 mile hike in good condition mostly following an old logging road. We will pass the Johnny Ringo State Historical Landmark (Johnny Ringo’s gravesite) while driving to the trailhead and stop on the way back for those who want to say hello to Johnny. This is a 90 minute drive to the trail from Bisbee, so we will meet at 8:00am (instead of 9:00am) at the Bisbee Courthouse fountain. Carpooling is strongly recommended. For more details, contact Steve at sss@theriver.com or call (520) 432-7770.

BACKTRACK - Guindani trail, Whetstones
from Sierra Vista. A couple of hikers who went to the Iron Man at 9 did their
own hike. We were on the trail by 9:20 and it got warm but never too hot.
We went up the south side first – the sun and rocks side while it was still
cooler. There was evidence of a fire on this side of mountain, with dying
barrel cacti and agaves, but the north side was clear of signs of fire, and
actually quite lush for such a time of drought. We had brunch on the saddle at
the high point of the trail. Some hikers’ compass app said we were at 5610
feet there. Sadly there were only 2 puddles of water in the creek bed that
comes down the canyon on the north side, though the dogs did enjoy a romp
in the water. Everyone was back in the parking lot by 1 p.m. - Monica
Guindani Trail
This hike meets at 8am.
HIKE GUINDANI TRAIL FROM KARTCHNER CAVERNS STATE PARK
Join the Muleteam this Saturday March 22nd for a hike in the Whetstone Mountains beginning in Kartchner Caverns State Park. The Guindani trail is a 4.2-mile loop. The trail is lovely in that there are no skree and the elevation is below Bisbee so the breathing is easy. One half is in the shade of a treed canyon with a steep hike. The other half is in the sun with very gradually lowering elevation. We will lunch on the saddle with lovely views.
It is about a one-hour drive to Kartchner Caverns, on Hwy 90 from Sierra Vista almost to Benson. To give us more time, we will meet March 22nd at 8:00am (not 9:00am) by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain or meet at the park entrance at 8:45am. Dogs on leashes welcome. Bring water and lunch. There is a State Park entrance fee of $10 per person or $20 per vehicle for 2 to 4 people (so carpooling is highly recommended). We should return around 3:30 pm. For more details contact Monica at 520-461-6799 or sometimesthelight@hotmail.com.
The Whetstone Mountains are named for a common rock there, novaculite, also called flint, used to sharpen knife blades. The Whetstones are also notorious for being where Wyatt Earp shot and killed Curly Bill Brocius. And what’s more, the dinosaur fossil, Sonorasaurus thompsoni from the Cretaceous Period was found there in 1998.
Juniper Flats
China Camp
Join the Muleteam this Saturday, March 8th, for a hike in the Dragoon Mountains on an old mining road with wonderful views. This hike starts with little elevation gain then changes to a moderate uphill to the camp ruins and down the same way for a little more than 5 miles total. Lunch will be by a creek, and there will be no climb to the peak! Bring water and lunch. Dogs welcome. Back mid-afternoon. Meet Saturday by 9am at the Old Bisbee Courthouse fountain to carpool (about an hour). Free, but gas donation is appreciated. For more details contact Sandy at (520) 353-5124 or slajudice@yahoo.com.
Anyone wanting to can meet the group at the turnoff from Hwy. 80 onto Middlemarch Road. Please be there by 9:30. We will drive on Middlemarch Road about 1-3/4 mile beyond where the road branches off to the left toward Slavin Gulch and Council Rocks. There is a large dirt parking area on the left where we will park and start hiking.

Fairbank Picnic
Join the Muleteam this Saturday March 1st for a special relaxing and fun event: our 15th Annual Potluck Riverside Picnic along the San Pedro River. We start at the Historic Fairbank Townsite and walk along a flat and easy trail, first to see the 100+ year old cemetery and then mill ruins until we get to the river in only about 1½ miles. At the riverside, we spread out the tablecloths, put out the food and drinks and have a long, relaxing lunch. We ask that everyone bring some food or drink to share. Beer & wine are welcome. All the plates, utensils and glasses will be provided. After lunch, everyone has the option to either return to Fairbank the way we came or continue the longer loop route along the river (about 4 more miles).

Bring water and snacks or lunch. Back early afternoon. Free. Dogs welcome, but be aware that there is lots of cholla along the narrow trail.
Meet February 22nd at 9 am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain, from which we will carpool up Tombstone Canyon Road to West Blvd. up to the Divide. Alternatively, hikers may head straight for the Divide and wait there. For more details contact Deb at (802)777-1499 or debvanschaack@gmail.com.
