Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a “Two For One Hike” in the canyons & foothills of the Huachuca Mountains. The trail is about 6.5 miles total with grasslands, forest, steep hillsides and a canyon creek. Bring water and lunch, but no dogs into Ramsey. All drivers will be shuttled back to their cars at Brown Canyon Ranch. Back mid-afternoon. Meet Feb 10 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool. Gas donation is appreciated. BACKTRACK - Red Rock Canyon
Distance: 7.3 miles (GPS track)
Ascent/Descent: (158 ft/1487ft.), including all ups and downs.
Hiking Time: 5:00 hours. Drivers: Dave Meraz and Guy Plaa
Weather: partly sunny with temperatures in the 50’s and 60’s.
Hike Narrative: Seven hikers showed up this morning for the scheduled hike in Red Rock Canyon in the Chiricahua Mountains. We piled into 2 vehicles to the detriment of Long Legs Richard. Our vehicle’s high clearance came in handy when driving the bumpy FR4242 to the trailhead. Arrived at the trailhead around 9:45 A.M with a drive time of about 1 hr.30 min via scenic but dusty Leslie Canyon.
Hiking the lower part of Red Rock Canyon (2.6 miles to Red Rock Spring) was fairly easy along a shady primitive road lined with juniper and oaks. There was no running water at all in the Red Rock Canyon streambed. Past the Red Rock Spring, the canyon narrows giving us a view of its colorful rhyolite walls. Soon after, the road deteriorated into deep gullies, downed trees and high stepping boulders making our progression much more difficult. All and in all a nice hike in company of good old pals. -Guy
