MULETEAM HIKE / VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
WET-DRY MAPPING OF SAN PEDRO RIVER
Every year since 1999 The Nature Conservancy conducts the wet-dry mapping of the entire 173 miles of the San Pedro River.
This year it takes place on Saturday June 17, with the help of volunteers and its local, industry, state and federal agency partners throughout the watershed.
Volunteers will work with GPS devices to record the start- and end-points of every wet portion along a stream or river, all the way from the headwaters in Sonora, Mexico, down to the confluence with the Gila River in Pinal County, Arizona, as well as many major tributaries.
Teams of 2 volunteers minimum, but preferably 3 - 5 volunteers will be assigned a 3 - 5 mile stretch of river on what is typically the driest, pre-monsoon day of the year, engaging the help of community-science volunteers to note where surface water is apparent in the San Pedro River.
CONTACT
If anyone from the Muleteam is willing to organize a team, you can contact:
Dorothy Boone
Arizona Volunteer Programs Director
The Nature Conservancy
Phone: 520-547-3437
DETAILS
When contacting Dorothy, mention that you are from the Muleteam and Bisbee, and specify the "Upper San Pedro River" section, which ranges south from Benson.
Sections will be assigned in the next few weeks, so time is somewhat of the essence.
A training will take place at the San Pedro House on the afternoon of Friday June 16, the night before the day of wet-dry mapping on Saturday June 17.
Dorothy mentioned that some folks who've attended the training at the San Pedro House in the past, camp out and share a potluck the night before departing for the wet-dry mapping the next morning.
