BACKTRACK - Juniper Flats
Seven hikers trekked through the Juniper Flats backcountry. Starting out below the southside of the second tower we headed eastward and then turned northward down into a beautiful canyon with ponderosa pine, mahogany bush and pinion pine. Scat along the trail suggests that pine nuts are primary forage for black bear. The group took lunch at a camp ruin in a lovely valley surrounded by grassland and alligator juniper. Switchbacks lead us up to the dirt road where the weary hikers took up an invite for hot tea and a tour of Camilla and Jim's beautiful off grid home. Over tea we watched the birds, marvelled at the windowed views and tallied steps on phones estimating 5 miles for the hike, somewhere in between the difference in 7 hiker's strides. - Carol
