Lower Miller Canyon

MULETEAM HIKES LOWER MILLER CANYON

Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a hike in the foothills of the Huachuca Mountains. The trail is moderate uphill with steep sections toward the mountains, and then loops back down following a small, wooded stream - about 5 miles total. Bring water and lunch. Back mid-afternoon. Free.

Meet Feb. 6 at 9 a.m. by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain, from which we will car-caravan in our separate vehicles to the trailhead (no carpooling at this time). Alternatively, hikers may meet us at 9:45 a.m. on Miller Canyon Road, at the first parking lot on the left after the road turns to dirt. For more details contact Jan at 704-299-6614 or bolduc03@icloud.com.

Hikers are asked to wear masks, with the exception of those who have difficulty with physical exertion while masked. The latter are asked to maintain a six-foot distance from other hikers.

BACKTRACK - Lewis Springs

The hike to Lewis Springs was delightfully unpredictable and different.  Despite the unexpected encounter with a Search and Rescue training session, we managed to find alternate parking and a way to access the trail at a spot beyond the exercise.  It was a five-mile, flat hike that involved a bit of bushwhacking (okay, maybe more than a bit) and a lovely historical presentation about the colorful history of the site. Fifteen folks and one dog enjoyed the warm, sunny day.  A new hike for the Mule Team! - Laura

Hike Change

CREST TRAIL HIKE POSTPONED, LEWIS SPRINGS SUBSTITUTED

It was a remarkable snowfall we had this week, beautiful to look at and bringing much-needed moisture to the desert. But conditions are not auspicious for hiking high in the Huachucas this Saturday.

The Crest Trail hike will therefore be rescheduled at a later date. This Saturday, January 30, join us for a walk along the San Pedro River to Lewis Springs, site of a popular resort over a century ago. This will be an easy, flat walk, about 4 miles total.

Meet January 30 at 9 a.m. by the Old Bisbee Courthouse fountain, from which we will car-caravan in our separate vehicles to the River (no carpooling at this time). Alternatively, hikers may meet us at the trailhead at 9:30 a.m. We will be parking at the turnoff immediately east of the River on the north side of Highway 90. For more details contact Laura at 206-715-6589.

Hikers are asked to wear masks, with the exception of those who have difficulty with physical exertion while masked. The latter are asked to maintain a six-foot distance from other hikers.

Film about the San Pedro

Mike Foster, who hosted Muleteam at Carr House a couple of years ago, is one of the cinematographers who worked with the Center for Biological Diversity to create a short film about the San Pedro River and the proposed Vigneto development at Benson. The film is available for viewing now through Jan. 31 here. On Thursday 1/28 at 5 PM Mike will be one of the participants in a Q&A session, registration here.

Crest Trail

 MULETEAM HIKES THE CREST TRAIL

Join the Muleteam this Saturday to hike the Crest Trail in the Huachuca Mountains. Weather permitting, we will depart from the parking lot at Montezuma Pass in Coronado National Memorial at 10:00 a.m. The trail traverses the crest of the mountains from there to Fort Huachuca. We will hike the first three miles, stop for lunch, then hike back. Moderate to easy, with beautiful overlooks. Bring water and a snack/lunch. Back by mid-afternoon. Free. Coronado National Memorial rules require dogs to be leashed.

Meet January 30 at 9 a.m. by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain, from which we will car-caravan in our separate vehicles to Montezuma Pass (no carpooling at this time). Alternatively, hikers may meet us at the Pass at 10:00 a.m. For more details contact Laura at 206-715-6589. Because the road to Montezuma Pass can be hazardous when wet, in the event of precipitation an alternate walk along the San Pedro will be substituted. Check this website Friday evening if in doubt.

Hikers are asked to wear masks, with the exception of those who have difficulty with physical exertion while masked. The latter are asked to maintain a six-foot distance from other hikers.

BACKTRACK - Patio Peak

The other day I went for a little ride. I stopped at the courthouse and started talking to a bunch of people I didn't even know (they all had facemasks and hats and sunglasses). Says I, we all have cars here; we should go for a ride . . . so we did. Got tired of driving . . . pulled over & so did all these people. We all walked up a little hill & at the top we found some more people & some dogs. Then I says dogs love hiking so that's what we should do. I commenced to leading down a road & we got all the way to a microwave repeater without getting lost once. Then we took various routes up hills & down gulches. So we comes to a rocky road going straight up a mountain. "Looks insane" says all. "We should go there 'cause that's what we do," I says. Couldn't go any higher, so we ate lunch and took in the vistas. We took a slightly different route back. Anyway myself & all these people I didn't even know made it home safely. All good.

19 friends . . . 3 pups . . . nice weather . . . fine day.   - John W.

Patio Peak

MULETEAM EXPLORES THE SOUTHERN MULES

Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a local hike from Yuma Trail in Warren, through Gold Gulch and by Gold Hill to a distinctive peak in the southern Mule Mountains. Have lunch on top and enjoy a curious view of Bisbee from a different angle. The summit features a concrete pad (hence "Patio Peak"); some may also remember a tree once decorated with beer cans stuck on the branches. Total distance about 6 miles, all up and down hills on old mining roads. Bring water and lunch. Back early afternoon.

Meet January 23 at 9 a.m. by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain, from which we will car-caravan in our separate vehicles to the trailhead (no carpooling at this time). Hikers familiar with the trailhead may meet us there. For more details contact John at 520-366-1099 or johnwasser@hotmail.com.

Hikers are asked to wear masks, with the exception of those who have difficulty with physical exertion while masked. The latter are asked to maintain a six-foot distance from other hikers.

BACKTRACK - Mt. Ballard

It was a sunny and warm morning as nine Muleteam hikers (no dogs) made the trek up Mt. Ballard. This hike seems to get harder and take longer every year! We enjoyed having a snack and lounging at the top while overlooking San Jose, Naco and Mexico. Two hikers decided to venture over to Fissure Peak, making their way across the saddle and up the rocky slope. Once there the views were even more spectacular. It was a great day for a hike that was made even better because of no snow this year!  - Sandy

BACKTRACK - Wood Canyon to Ridge

Thirteen hikers enjoyed a beautiful day, hiking from the end of Wood Canyon up a trail that we learned was created several years ago by four Muleteamers: Ken, Ira, Guy, and Gary. Kudos to them for giving us another lovely place to hike. The trail connected to the Ridge Trail and City Trail, up Zacatecas Canyon, then back to the Ridge Trail and Wood Canyon, a loop of just under 6 miles.  - Sue

BACKTRACK - Mural Hill

Sixteen intrepid hikers all reached Mural Hill Peak on a clear sunny winter day. The faster-moving group up front reached the peak well before six more leisurely hikers including hike leader Alice Heinecke. Fortunately, the first group lolled about on the warm crest long enough to be joined by the tail end of the hikers. Overconfidence led to some adventure as four of the last hikers to depart the crest were led astray by novice Mural Hill hike leader Alice, diverging along the longer East path off the summit. We had to bushwhack and slide when the trail petered out, ending up well East and under the saddle. Shimmying through a barbed wire fence led us back to Larry and John W., who had kindly waited for us when they realized we were not behind them. It was a long, but beautiful hike. - Alice
