Perimeter Trail

WALK THE PERIMETER TRAIL
Join the Muleteam this Saturday, January 6th, for a hike along the winding foothills of the Huachuca Mountains between Carr and Miller Canyons. This is a relatively easy, level trail with vista views of the San Pedro Valley, but it will be about 7 miles roundtrip.

Meet at 9am at the Bisbee Courthouse fountain or alternatively at 9:30am at the first parking lot on Carr Canyon Road off Highway 92. Bring water and lunch. Dogs welcome. Back by mid-afternoon. For more details contact Anne at 520-432-0307 or areiniger@wyoming.com.

BACKTRACK - Mural Hill
On a cool, cloudy morning 24 people joined the group at various places for the hike to Mural Hill, and two people returned, so 22 of us made it to the top. A small group of fast hikers went ahead, but everyone came together for the rewarding lunch view at the top and signed the register there. Jay described the area geology, Lindsay marked the upper trail with ribbons - and so far as I know nobody got lost. The hike is getting longer as we get older, and the last of us returning stopped at Laura's house for a drink after. Thanks for hiking with me. - Larry

BACKTRACK - Bisbee Crosses
This past Saturday, seven people and one dog set out in the cold wind, which is requisite weather when the Muleteam does the annual winter holiday hike to the crosses and shrines above Old Bisbee. The previous night's rain presented a gorgeous clear sky and vibrant variations of color in the rocks. Having made an early start, longtime Muleteam hiker John Wasser was already surveying the views above Old Bisbee once the group arrived. The shrine was established by Adolfo and Mary Vasquez in 1980, and it was noticed that the beautiful details among the shrines have changed as the years pass. Thank you for keeping this tradition going. Happy Holidays, Muleteam friends.  - Maggie

BACKTRACK - Cochise Stronghold
Nineteen people and one dog enjoyed a perfect weather day in the Dragoons on the Cochise Trail. We leapfrogged and accordioned up the canyon, with hikers peeling off the trail from time to time to appreciate the wonderland of rock formations. Most made it to the saddle for lunch before descending. All hikers pictured except Anne and Doug Reiniger and your photographer. My thanks to all for accommodating an early start; it's a long drive for a hike, but I always come home knowing it was worth it. -- Lindsay

Cochise Stronghold

HIKE COCHISE TRAIL
Join the Muleteam for a hike at 8am on Saturday, December 16th through the natural fortress and unique rock formations of the Dragoon Mountains. From the east trailhead at Cochise Stronghold Campground, the trail ascends 3 miles to the Divide where we'll enjoy views to the east and west as we enjoy lunch. We can turn around there for a 6-mile route or -as an option-continue downhill to the west trailhead and then re-trace our hike for a 9-mile route. Bring water and food. Leashed dogs OK.

NOTE: The drive to the campground parking area is an hour-and-a-half drive on Route 191, so we will meet earlier than usual at 8am, at the fountain by the County Courthouse. There is a day-use fee of $8 per car to park at the campground (free if you have an America the Beautiful or Senior Park Pass). Carpooling is strongly recommended. For more details, text Lindsay at 954-770-2221.

BACKTRACK - Juniper Flats
It was a picture perfect weather day for a hike in the Mule Mountains! Everyone in the group of eight went over the ridge tops when there was a choice of over or around the mountains above Bisbee. The views couldn't have been clearer, and we took our time visiting and removing layers as the day progressed. We chatted with some Mule team hikers around the five-points area who did a shorter reverse hike from the gulch. Two more hikers met us around the same area and went our direction and we added one more hiker on Juniper Flats before the climb to the lunch spot at the pagoda. If you were keeping track, there were eleven for our group photo at the top. The bright yellow foliage was especially beautiful, both in town and as seen from above. - Susan

Bisbee to Juniper Flats

HIKE BISBEE RIDGE TO JUNIPER FLATS
Join the Muleteam this Saturday for THE BEST views of Old Bisbee! This hike is 6.33 miles round trip. The hike starts up Clawson Ave. to High Road and then on to the City Trail and Ridge Trail. The most challenging section is climbing up to the Ridge Trail, where some light rock scrambling is required. You will be rewarded with the views, which get better and better as you ascend! If this is too difficult, there is an option to go the more well-traveled trail around the top.
We will hike up and down the ridges (or around) overlooking town and lower Wildcat Canyon all the way to Juniper Flats. We'll eat lunch at the pagoda and enjoy the view. The return is ALL downhill, walking on Juniper Flats Rd. to West Blvd. and back down to Tombstone Canyon. Bring water, lunch, walking poles optional, dogs welcome.  Back early afternoon. Meet Dec. 9 at 9 a.m. by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain. Free. For more details contact Susan Mayes at 610-220-5287.

BACKTRACK - Ramsey Canyon
The hike in Ramsey Canyon from the Nature Conservancy Preserve up the canyon to an intersection with other trails was one of the most beautiful hikes the leader has taken in a long while. The total distance of the hike and the total elevation gain vary according to whose device is being checked.
One hiker became separated from the group on the way up and due to being out of cell phone range at a crucial time, the hike leader unfortunately was not able to communicate and give directions to our location, but that hiker wisely returned to the starting point and was fine.
The others who did complete the hike, or completed most of the hike, agreed we were lucky to experience the leaf colors, the water in the creek and the views of Ramsey Canyon.
Thanks to Larry, Anne and Doug for their efforts to insure parking and arrival for all. It turned out however, that the parking lot was not full when we arrived.  - Molly
