BACKTRACK - Garden Canyon
It was a beautiful day for a hike in Garden Canyon on Fort Huachuca. Due to some confusion about obtaining Fort passes, only 4 Muleteam hikers participated. For future reference, even though passes are supposed to be obtained at the Van Deman (East) Gate on weekdays, Molly and Jan were able to get their passes Saturday morning at Buffalo Soldier (West) Gate. If you've never been to Fort Huachuca, get a pass (valid for a year) and plan to go! In my opinion, the Fort's land is some of the best in the Huachuca Mountains.
It was a layer on/layer off kind of day with sun, clouds and cool canyon winds. We hiked up Garden Canyon Rd. from the parking area at Upper Garden Canyon (the road is now barricaded beyond that point), oohing and aahing at the red maple foliage, golden sycamores and waterfalls, and then stopping at the first pictograph area before eventually reaching the end of Garden Canyon Rd. at a bit over 3 miles. From there we ventured a bit further into Sawmill Canyon, taking a lunch break at a concrete picnic table in a gorgeous spot. We all found it hard to believe that there were picnic tables in forlorn Sawmill Canyon, but when Garden Canyon Rd. was accessible by car all the way to its end the picnic tables probably made sense.
We returned the same way, stopping at the second pictograph site. We ran into several hunters and had some good conversations. 6.5 miles later we were back to our cars and on our way out of the Fort by 2 p.m. Another great Muleteam day! - Deb
