HIKE SOUTH PERIMETER TRAIL
Join the Muleteam Saturday, November 8th, for a hike along the winding foothills of the Huachuca Mountains between Hunter and Miller Canyons with vista views of the San Pedro Valley. The hills are more gradual than North Perimeter trail, and the scenic lunch spot is the same. It will be about a 7 mile round trip hike (3 miles to the Miller Road parking lot and a half mile to the little peak for lunch). Bring water, lunch, hat and maybe walking stick. Meet November 8th at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool. For more info contact Ed at erex66@gmail.com or 313-204-2119.
Trailhead: Alternatively, hikers may meet at 9:30am at the Hunter Canyon Road parking lot. Turn west of Route 92 onto East Hunter Canyon Road. Note there is no road sign, but Google Maps shows the dirt road. The road is near where the four lanes of 92 drop to two lanes. Cross the cattle grate and park on the left. Hope to have a Muleteam sign to help you find East Hunter Canyon Rd.
Short hike: If you are not up to a 7 mile hike, you and one of your hiking buddies could leave one vehicle at the Miller Canyon Rd parking lot (first parking lot on the left after the paved road becomes a dirt road) and drive the other vehicle to the Hunter Canyon Road parking lot. This way you'll do a four mile hike. Or you can ride with me from Miller Canyon Rd parking lot to Hunter Rd parking lot (be at the Miller Canyon Rd parking lot by 9:20am).

BACKTRACK - Bisbee Rocks
Eighteen hikers and two adventurous dogs gathered at the Hitching Post to explore the ancient Glance Conglomerate that underlies Warren. For two participants, it was their very first Mule Team outing—a baptism by sun and stone. Though we set out early, the desert heat wasted no time asserting itself, rising steadily as the morning unfolded.
After a quick primer on the mind-bending scale of geological deep time, our group meandered toward the northwest edge of the Glance Conglomerate. Along the way, we learned—perhaps more than we bargained for—about Bisbee’s major rock groups: the Pinal Schist, Paleozoic limestones, and the storied Bisbee Group. Turning south on Cochise Row, we passed the Ball Park Brewing Company, then climbed Congdon Avenue toward Warren’s eastern rim.
A brief detour led us to limestone outcrops rich with fossils, formed by long vanished seas. Nearby, the Mural Formation offered a textbook view of the basin-and-range landscape that defines much of southeastern Arizona. By midday, the heat had conquered any appetite for lunch, and hikers drifted off—to the Mariachi Festival, the comfort of the Hitching Post, or simply a patch of shade.
All told, the trek covered 3.8 miles with 250 feet of elevation gain—small numbers for a hike, but a giant step through almost 2 billion years of Earth’s history. - Jay
