Miller Peak

CONQUER MILLER PEAK
Join the Muleteam this Saturday at the earlier time of 8am for a hike to the highest peak in the Huachuca Mountains for a spectacular view of the area. This trail from Montezuma Pass has a challenging elevation gain and 10.6 miles total distance, but anyone has the option to stop on the way and wait for others to return. Bring water, lunch, and maybe a walking stick. Back late afternoon. Meet March 25 at 8am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool. Free, but gas donation is appreciated. For more details contact Carol at chandlercarolpsk@gmail.com or 413-667-8760.

Option to meet at the trailhead at Montezuma Pass parking lot about 8:45

BACKTRACK - Joe's Canyon
A group of 13 hikers and no dogs (park service policy) started out on the hike along the Joe's Canyon Trail to Coronado Peak. To those who are wary of the number 13, our hike did encounter a degree of bad luck when the wind started kicking up along with what would have been a high temperature in about mid fifties without wind. The conditions were barely manageable for hikers in motion without extra clothing, but stops were distinctly unpleasant.
If hikers had been informed before arriving that morning, of the intention to have four stops to regroup along the trail, they would more likely have brought that extra clothing, but the description with that intention failed to be posted to the Muleteam blogspot by the responsible party despite being sent in with sufficient time to spare.
Those without extra clothing, which turned out to be most hikers, understandably decided not to stop to regroup at designated locations, and the hikers quickly got spread out with only one short frigid regrouping after the group photo fortunately was taken before the weather deteriorated. In addition to windchill, the skies turned from completely clear at the beginning, to mostly sunny for the rest of the hike.
The only sighting of interest was the unsightly network of unfinished roads which had been gouged into the landscape in full view from the trail above. Nonexistent only a few years before, the roads were intended to be used to transport heavy equipment and materials for completing the  section of Border Wall along the southern boundary of the National Memorial. The wall itself has not yet been completed owing to sudden changes in the political climate just prior to its construction-- a moratorium which will providentially become permanent.
All of those who wanted to reach the shelter at the top of the Coronado Peak summit were able to do so, but even they started a return without even a brief snack break at the top. We all trickled back to the visitor center trailhead over a period of an hour, the last being the leader and one other, who found everyone else on the hike to have already left.  - Brad
