Perimeter Trail

WALK THE PERIMETER TRAIL
Join the Muleteam this Saturday, January 6th, for a hike along the winding foothills of the Huachuca Mountains between Carr and Miller Canyons. This is a relatively easy, level trail with vista views of the San Pedro Valley, but it will be about 7 miles roundtrip.

Meet at 9am at the Bisbee Courthouse fountain or alternatively at 9:30am at the first parking lot on Carr Canyon Road off Highway 92. Bring water and lunch. Dogs welcome. Back by mid-afternoon. For more details contact Anne at 520-432-0307 or areiniger@wyoming.com.

BACKTRACK - Mural Hill
On a cool, cloudy morning 24 people joined the group at various places for the hike to Mural Hill, and two people returned, so 22 of us made it to the top. A small group of fast hikers went ahead, but everyone came together for the rewarding lunch view at the top and signed the register there. Jay described the area geology, Lindsay marked the upper trail with ribbons - and so far as I know nobody got lost. The hike is getting longer as we get older, and the last of us returning stopped at Laura's house for a drink after. Thanks for hiking with me. - Larry

BACKTRACK - Bisbee Crosses
This past Saturday, seven people and one dog set out in the cold wind, which is requisite weather when the Muleteam does the annual winter holiday hike to the crosses and shrines above Old Bisbee. The previous night's rain presented a gorgeous clear sky and vibrant variations of color in the rocks. Having made an early start, longtime Muleteam hiker John Wasser was already surveying the views above Old Bisbee once the group arrived. The shrine was established by Adolfo and Mary Vasquez in 1980, and it was noticed that the beautiful details among the shrines have changed as the years pass. Thank you for keeping this tradition going. Happy Holidays, Muleteam friends.  - Maggie

BACKTRACK - Cochise Stronghold
Nineteen people and one dog enjoyed a perfect weather day in the Dragoons on the Cochise Trail. We leapfrogged and accordioned up the canyon, with hikers peeling off the trail from time to time to appreciate the wonderland of rock formations. Most made it to the saddle for lunch before descending. All hikers pictured except Anne and Doug Reiniger and your photographer. My thanks to all for accommodating an early start; it's a long drive for a hike, but I always come home knowing it was worth it. -- Lindsay

Cochise Stronghold

HIKE COCHISE TRAIL
Join the Muleteam for a hike at 8am on Saturday, December 16th through the natural fortress and unique rock formations of the Dragoon Mountains. From the east trailhead at Cochise Stronghold Campground, the trail ascends 3 miles to the Divide where we'll enjoy views to the east and west as we enjoy lunch. We can turn around there for a 6-mile route or -as an option-continue downhill to the west trailhead and then re-trace our hike for a 9-mile route. Bring water and food. Leashed dogs OK.

NOTE: The drive to the campground parking area is an hour-and-a-half drive on Route 191, so we will meet earlier than usual at 8am, at the fountain by the County Courthouse. There is a day-use fee of $8 per car to park at the campground (free if you have an America the Beautiful or Senior Park Pass). Carpooling is strongly recommended. For more details, text Lindsay at 954-770-2221.

BACKTRACK - Juniper Flats
It was a picture perfect weather day for a hike in the Mule Mountains! Everyone in the group of eight went over the ridge tops when there was a choice of over or around the mountains above Bisbee. The views couldn't have been clearer, and we took our time visiting and removing layers as the day progressed. We chatted with some Mule team hikers around the five-points area who did a shorter reverse hike from the gulch. Two more hikers met us around the same area and went our direction and we added one more hiker on Juniper Flats before the climb to the lunch spot at the pagoda. If you were keeping track, there were eleven for our group photo at the top. The bright yellow foliage was especially beautiful, both in town and as seen from above. - Susan

Bisbee to Juniper Flats

HIKE BISBEE RIDGE TO JUNIPER FLATS
Join the Muleteam this Saturday for THE BEST views of Old Bisbee! This hike is 6.33 miles round trip. The hike starts up Clawson Ave. to High Road and then on to the City Trail and Ridge Trail. The most challenging section is climbing up to the Ridge Trail, where some light rock scrambling is required. You will be rewarded with the views, which get better and better as you ascend! If this is too difficult, there is an option to go the more well-traveled trail around the top.
We will hike up and down the ridges (or around) overlooking town and lower Wildcat Canyon all the way to Juniper Flats. We'll eat lunch at the pagoda and enjoy the view. The return is ALL downhill, walking on Juniper Flats Rd. to West Blvd. and back down to Tombstone Canyon. Bring water, lunch, walking poles optional, dogs welcome.  Back early afternoon. Meet Dec. 9 at 9 a.m. by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain. Free. For more details contact Susan Mayes at 610-220-5287.

BACKTRACK - Ramsey Canyon
The hike in Ramsey Canyon from the Nature Conservancy Preserve up the canyon to an intersection with other trails was one of the most beautiful hikes the leader has taken in a long while. The total distance of the hike and the total elevation gain vary according to whose device is being checked.
One hiker became separated from the group on the way up and due to being out of cell phone range at a crucial time, the hike leader unfortunately was not able to communicate and give directions to our location, but that hiker wisely returned to the starting point and was fine.
The others who did complete the hike, or completed most of the hike, agreed we were lucky to experience the leaf colors, the water in the creek and the views of Ramsey Canyon.
Thanks to Larry, Anne and Doug for their efforts to insure parking and arrival for all. It turned out however, that the parking lot was not full when we arrived.  - Molly

RAMSEY CANYON TO PAT SCOTT TRAIL
Join us on December 2nd for our hike beginning in the Ramsey Canyon Nature Conservancy Preserve at the end of Ramsey Canyon Road off Route 92 in the Huachuca Mountains. There will be a charge to enter - $5 for Cochise County residents and Nature Conservancy members.
After walking through the grounds of the Nature Preserve where we are likely to see humming birds, deer and other wildlife, we will ascend 500 feet in a series of switchbacks for one half mile. After that, it is a short distance to a scenic overlook of Ramsey Canyon. We will proceed beyond the overlook to the area where the Hamburg Trail meets the Wisconsin Canyon and then the Pat Scott Trails. Bring lunch and water. Our lunch break will take place in that area. We will travel back to the Nature Preserve on the same trail, for a total of about 4.6 miles round trip. No dogs allowed on this one.
Meet at the Courthouse fountain at 9am on December 2nd to carpool. Carpooling will be essential for this hike as there is limited parking at the Nature Preserve, so consider participating in carpooling even if you generally don’t. The road is smooth, so any car will be fine. For details or any questions, contact Molly at eeo.source@gmail.com or (208) 720-7518.

BACKTRACK - Charleston
William avoided leading this hike by catching a cold, so I filled in. The morning was cold and cloudy but warmed up during the day. We had 10 people and 5 big dogs. No one else had done this hike before, but we didn't get too lost in the mesquite as we explored the ruins of Charleston and the petroglyphs. We found a good spot to cross the river to the old mill walls, and then it was an easy trail to the Monster tunnel by the river for lunch. Everyone seemed to enjoy the fall day rambling by the water, especially the dogs.  - Larry

Charleston

DISCOVER THE RUINS OF CHARLESTON
Join the Muleteam this Saturday for a hike along the San Pedro River to the site of an old mining town lost in the woods, mill ruins and ancient petroglyphs. This is an easy, flat hike only about 3 miles total, but the trail is sometimes vague and may involve wet feet. Lunch stop at the "Monsters Tunnel". Bring water and lunch. Good dog or kid hike. Back mid-afternoon. Free. Meet November 25 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain. From there we will car-caravan to the trailhead. Alternatively, hikers may meet us at 9:30 at the parking lot off Charleston Road by the bridge on the east side of the San Pedro. For more details contact William at williamrisler@hotmail.com or 518-869-7636.

BACKTRACK - Laura's Loop
Another very nice hike along the sides of the Mule Mountains and down to Zacatecas Canyon and into town. The weather was perfect and -as advertised- this was a relatively short and easy trail, with wonderful views of the mountains and canyon. Sixteen hikers were treated to walks through trails and views of the homes of Old Bisbee. About half of the group went back via the City Trail and the rest followed Brewery Gulch into town; all of us returning by noon. A very well-marked rewarding trail that can easily be repeated by almost anyone.  - Doug

Laura's Loop

HIKE FROM OLD BISBEE TO THE HILLS ABOVE ZACATECAS CANYON
Join the Muleteam this Saturday, November 18th for one of our easier local hikes which we call Laura’s Loop in honor of the favorite hike of our neighbor Laura. Starting at 9am at the Courthouse we'll walk city streets to the end of OK Street. From there we'll follow a trail along the sides of the hills, with great views of the Mule Mountain Ridge and down to Zacatecas Canyon. At the end of the Canyon, we’ll have the option to pick up City Trail (with different views of downtown Bisbee) to High Road and then on the street back to the Courthouse. For those who don’t want to hike City Trail, you’ll have the option to walk down Brewery Gulch through downtown and up Main Street directly to the Courthouse. About 4 miles total. Bring water and a snack. Back before 1pm. Dogs welcome. Free. For more details call Doug at (520) 432-0307 or reiniger@wyoming.com.

Also on November 18th there will be a Celebration of Life for John MacKinnon, the recently deceased husband of Elizabeth Bernstein. Elizabeth has been an active member of the Muleteam for many years. The celebration will take place at 2pm at the Bisbee School District office at 519 W. Melody Lane, so there will be plenty of time to get there after the hike.

BACKTRACK - Clark Springs
In all 10 hikers and one dog began the trek up the Clark Springs Trail from the Miller Canyon parking area.  The air was crisp and the sun was shining so it made for a perfect hike for both old and new friends.  After lunch we headed down the trail and took the John Cooper Loop back.  In total about four miles and an early afternoon finish.
From what I hear, it wasn't nearly as eventful as last week's hike, but a good one with easy walking and great conversation.  Thanks!  - Sandy

SIDETRACK - Nov 25?
Hello, Team. We don't have a volunteer to lead the hike on November 25. This is Home Tour weekend, so we're looking for someone to come up with a short, local hike that will end at about noon. That will enable anyone who wants to visit some homes and engage in the auction (which ends at 4:00pm) at least three hours. If we don't get a volunteer by the end of next week, we'll have to cancel the hike for that day.

On another note, we don't have any volunteers for any hikes between Jan 13 and March 2. Please think about a cool weather destination.  - Doug

Clark Springs / John Cooper

CLARK SPRINGS and JOHN COOPER TRAIL LOOP (sort of)
Join the Muleteam on Saturday, November 11th to hike on the Clark Springs Trail from the Miller Canyon trailhead. Prepare for sun exposure and some loose footing; otherwise, an easy hike. Enjoy beautiful views of the San Pedro Valley and the Dragoon and Mule Mountains. We will hike the trail to where it joins the Carr Canyon Road, have lunch, then start back and take the John Cooper Trail loop. The elevation gain is about 541 ft.; total round trip approximately 4 miles. Back mid-afternoon. Meet November 11th at 9am by the County Courthouse fountain in Old Bisbee. Carpooling is encouraged. Free, but gas donation appreciated. For more details contact Sandy at (520) 353-5124 or slajudice@yahoo.com.

If you prefer to meet at the trailhead, we will be parking and starting the hike at the end of Miller Canyon Road (second parking area). Meet there at around 9:45am.

BACKTRACK - Brown Canyon
A different kind of a day.  Only four mule teamers showed up at the Courthouse fountain, so off we went in one car!  At the Brown Canyon Ranch, we grew to a party of ten, but not a single dog!  At the traditional trough stop, we encountered the ever-intrepid Brad, who had planned ahead of time to share the photo opportunity with us. Then, 9 of us continued on to the overlook lunch spot, which is about 1,000 feet total of elevation gain from the parking lot.  Four women (NO MEN) trekked on after lunch, for an additional mile and 400 additional feet of elevation.  Here's where it gets weird.  Three of those who stayed behind to enjoy relaxing, really showed off those relaxation skills by passing around a funny looking pipe and getting dreamy looks on their faces while waxing poetic on a variety of subjects.  The conversation was topped off by a graphic description by one about crematoriums, cremations and how it is done (a son in the business...).  It was all capped off with the discovery that one person had been imbibing bloody marys...claiming that they are excellent for increasing intravascular volume (??) which is important while hiking.  Yes.  And that is my report.   Laura

Brown Canyon

WALK THE BROWN CANYON TRAIL

Join the Muleteam this Saturday November 4th for a hike through a unique and scenic wooded canyon (with fall colors if we’re lucky) in the Huachuca Mountains of Sierra Vista. This trail is well-marked and moderately difficult with a mix of some uphill sections through the forest, following a running creek making a roundtrip of about 6 miles. Bring water and lunch. Back mid-afternoon. Meet Nov 4 at 9am by the Old Bisbee courthouse fountain to carpool or join us at 10am at Brown Canyon Ranch in Sierra Vista.

The ride to the trailhead at Brown Canyon Ranch (off Ramsey Road/Route 92) is about 45 minutes from the Courthouse. There is a day-use fee of $8 per vehicle, which is waived for holders of National Park Passes (Annual, Senior, Military). Gas donation to carpool drivers is appreciated. BACKTRACK - Ridge Loop
It was perfect weather for 17 people and the first hike of the season. Bisbee soon disappeared as we hiked down Zacatecas and up to the ridge trail to do the loop back around. Great views, and a first time hike for some people. The breeze was nice and the grass was turning orange. We took this photo before the group got scattered, and almost everyone met back at Carol's house for a relaxing potluck. A good start for the new season.  - Larry

Hiking update

Hello, All
Thanks to Carol, Sandy & Susan for quickly volunteering to lead hikes on Oct 28, Nov 11 & Nov 25. Every hike needs time in advance to get a final description and notice to include in our blogspot and local newspaper, so it's important that we fill the calendar soon.

In our case, we REALLY need a volunteer to lead the November 4th hike and almost as urgent is our need for a November 18th leader. PLEASE look at your calendars and think about a hike you'd be willing to lead on one of those two dates.

Beyond that, we have NO volunteers for any day for the rest of the season- Dec 2 to May 18-so think about your favorite hike and pick a date.
Thanks,
Doug

SIDETRACK - Cinque Terre, Italy
There is a national park on the coast of Italy that includes five traffic-free villages connected by train, ferry and many mountainous hiking trails. I was there 3 weeks and recommend it if you'd like a beautiful walking holiday. A link to my trip photos... Cinque Terre.  - Larry

The courthouse fountain is repaired and flowing again for the new hiking season.

24th Season Begins

2023-2024 MULETEAM SEASON STARTS ON OCTOBER 28TH

The Muleteam is our local Bisbee hiking group that has been having Saturday hikes from late October to early May every year since 2000. It’s an informal group with no organization, meetings or dues. Anyone is welcome to show up at the County Court House any Saturday at 9:00AM (with some early departures). We have a core group of diverse hikers (some regulars going back 20 years) but are happy to have short-term visitors and seasonal renters. Many great friendships have been made by meeting people with similar interest in hiking and exploring the beautiful lands of Southern Cochise County.

Muleteam hikes are not races. There is always a range of endurance and styles among our hikers, but we go at a reasonable pace, make sure not to let anyone fall too far behind, take frequent breaks and sit together for a long lunch break. Our hikes average 4-7 miles, and there is a very wide range of difficulty, from casual river walks to going to the summit of Miller Peak, at 9,000 feet the highest mountain in the Huachucas.

There is advance notice of every hike, with a detailed description. Needless to say, we each only go on hikes that make sense to us. Every week is different, and it’s fun when new people show up. Larry Milam has been the overall leader and organizer for over 15 years. Everything anyone needs to know about the Muleteam is on line at muleteam.blogspot.com.  That has the hike calendar for the whole season, description upcoming hikes and past hikes (with photos), plus ongoing notices.

It is crucially important that we get people to volunteer to lead a hike. The blogspot will have the calendar for all hiking Saturdays between October 28, 2023 to May 11, 2024. You don’t have to be a hard-core hiker to lead one (or more) of these hikes-or one of your favorite hikes. Our past hikes were a very wide range of locations, distance from Old Bisbee, difficulty, and environment. WE NEED HIKE LEADERS NOW TO VOLUNTEER WELL IN ADVANCE FOR EVERY SATURDAY OF THE SEASON. IF WE DON’T HAVE A LEADER WE HAVE TO CANCEL HIKES. PLEASE DON’T LET THAT HAPPEN.

Doug Reiniger, a 20+ year Muleteam veteran, is in charge of recruitment of Trip Leaders. Please contact him at reiniger@wyoming.com or phone/text (307) 690-6625 or call local land-line at (520) 432-0307 to volunteer to lead a hike.

Carr House Events

Archaeology Presentation
Coming up on Sunday, August 27, at 1:30 p.m., please join us at Carr House, 1011 E. Carr Canyon Road,  for An Overview of the Archaeology of the Huachuca Mountains. Our little corner of Southeastern Arizona is a treasure trove of archaeological sites, many of them dating back thousands of years.  Some have been excavated and then protected, such as the Native American site in Garden Canyon on Fort Huachuca, while others remain to be discovered. Susan Bier, U. S. Forest Service Archaeologist, will provide a summary of the timeline and site types of pre-contact and historic-era sites in the Huachuca Mountains. For safety reasons occupancy in the program room at Carr House is limited to 49 people.  Please arrive early to be sure you get a seat, as additional visitors over the limit will not be admitted while the program is going on.  Overflow guests will be invited to watch a live stream of the program at our outside picnic area.  - Carolyn Santucci

Hike with Mike
Carr House Visitor Information Center, 1011 E. Carr Canyon Road, Saturday, September 9, 9 a.m.  Join Mike Foster, our Carr House host, to learn more about the plants of the Huachuca Mountains.  Mike’s presentation will start with a short video about many of the plant species in the Madrean Evergreen Woodlands surrounding Carr House.  You’ll learn about the “sky islands” of the Huachuca Mountains and how plants here more closely resemble those of the Sierra Madre Mountains to the south rather than those of the Rocky Mountains to the north.  Following the video, Mike will lead a hike around Carr House, so we’ll have the chance to identify the plants introduced in the video.  There may be opportunities to see other inhabitants of Carr Canyon as well, such as insects, lizards, birds, and mammals.  Bring your camera!  You’ll want to snap a few photos to help you remember the flora and fauna you’ve seen.  For safety reasons occupancy in the program room at Carr House is limited to 49 people.  Please arrive early to be sure you get a seat, as additional visitors over the limit will not be admitted while the program is going on.  Overflow guests will be invited to watch a live stream of the program at our outside picnic area.

Gary Michaels

GOODBYE GARY

Gretchen wants you to know that her husband Gary Michaels passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, August 4. She asks that you please respect her privacy at this time.

Gary and Gretchen and their dog Daisy hiked with the Muleteam for about ten years up until a few years ago, and they became good friends with everyone.

Goodbye Gary. We'll miss you.

Gus Memorial

Dear Friends,

Gus died peacefully on May 23rd. We will bury his ashes at the base of the rose bush in front of our house, which was his favorite place to huddle under the shade in warm weather, and we invite you all to join us on Sunday, July 16th at 2:30pm in thanking him for so many wonderful memories. For those of you who are away or otherwise can't make it, we would welcome your thoughts by email: reiniger@wyoming.com. which we will read at his Celebration of Life along with what those who attend and choose to say a few words.

SIDETRACK - Blog for the Muleteam
I'm looking for that certain someone who can take over the fun job of posting the weekly Muleteam blog next season. Doug creates the hike schedule which you would post with a current hike description (from Doug), past hike report (from the hike leader) and group photo (from whoever took it). Time involved is minimal, but reliability is important. I can show you the specific blog details before the season begins and be available for any questions. If you have enjoyed hiking with this group you would be continuing the life of the Muleteam. Reply to larryjmilam@gmail.com. Thanks. - Larry

River Mapping

MULETEAM HIKE / VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

WET-DRY MAPPING OF SAN PEDRO RIVER
Every year since 1999 The Nature Conservancy conducts the wet-dry mapping of the entire 173 miles of the San Pedro River.

This year it takes place on Saturday June 17, with the help of volunteers and its local, industry, state and federal agency partners throughout the watershed.

Volunteers will work with GPS devices to record the start- and end-points of every wet portion along a stream or river, all the way from the headwaters in Sonora, Mexico, down to the confluence with the Gila River in Pinal County, Arizona, as well as many major tributaries.

Teams of 2 volunteers minimum, but preferably 3 - 5 volunteers will be assigned a 3 - 5 mile stretch of river on what is typically the driest, pre-monsoon day of the year, engaging the help of community-science volunteers to note where surface water is apparent in the San Pedro River.

CONTACT
If anyone from the Muleteam is willing to organize a team, you can contact:

Dorothy Boone
Arizona Volunteer Programs Director
The Nature Conservancy
Phone: 520-547-3437

DETAILS
When contacting Dorothy, mention that you are from the Muleteam and Bisbee, and specify the "Upper San Pedro River" section, which ranges south from Benson.

Sections will be assigned in the next few weeks, so time is somewhat of the essence.

A training will take place at the San Pedro House on the afternoon of Friday June 16, the night before the day of wet-dry mapping on Saturday June 17.

Dorothy mentioned that some folks who've attended the training at the San Pedro House in the past, camp out and share a potluck the night before departing for the wet-dry mapping the next morning.

BACKTRACK - Palominas Last Hike & Potluck
This hiking season came to an end Saturday.  Twenty-six friends and two dogs shared an outstanding smorgasbord of delicious nutrients.  We were happy to have our friends from Mexico join us.  As always, John's homemade ice cream was a big hit.  There was plenty of food and drink, don't think anyone went home hungry.  Thanks to everyone who shared.  The hikes were easy and low key,  The last minute walk along the river was a hit.  The hike along the road was a good easy work out, a bit windy and sunny.  Both hikes were good enough to justify us stuffing ourselves.  Someone jokingly suggested we have a pot luck at the end of each hike next year.  Next season will be here before we know it,  let's hope it will be as interesting and good as this one.  Thanks Doug and Larry for putting this season together and keeping us all in the loop.  Be safe and enjoy your summer.  - Ken and Sandy

Palominas

PALOMINAS HIKE AND POTLUCK
I'm excited about the end of year potluck and hike. It's always sad to end the season, but then there's next year! Our hike will be an easy out and back along an old dirt road that eventually leads to the border. There will be wide open spaces and great views of the Huachucas and San Jose Peak. The hike is relatively flat except for a wash along the way. It will be hot. We'll hike approximately two hours total (not all the way to the border).
Meet 9am, Saturday, May 6 at the Bisbee courthouse fountain. Bring a dish to share and your favorite beverage. Please consider bringing your own reusable plates and silverware to reduce waste, I'll provide some for those who forget. There are NO grills and NO water. If you’re only coming for the potluck, show up anytime. We’ll probably be back from the hike about 11:30. Dogs welcome. See you all there! If you have any questions call Ken at 520-432-9152 or kenheusman@yahoo.com.

Trailhead/potluck location
You can meet to hike at the Palominas Trailhead by 9:30 (or 11:30 for the potluck). It is located just West of the Brite Spot on Highway 92, between mile marker 342-341. There is a blue Parking Area sign and a Forest Service brown binocular sign. Turn there and proceed to the end.

BACKTRACK - Carr House
This Saturday's hike was somewhat unique because (rather than trekking uphill through the Huachuca wilderness) we sat at the Carr House for a presentation, followed by a short stroll to the nearby ruins of the early pioneer settlement in Carr Canyon.  Our presenter and tour guide, Mike Foster (a videographer by trade but also a caretaker at Carr house) proved to be a wealth of information, telling us of the taxonomy of the local tree species... To the way indigenous peoples made use of and sustained themselves from these trees and plants....to the history of this area.... As well as the animals species one is likely to find here.  I personally now know how to identify 3 different kinds of oak trees.  There was literally too much information to retain, but fortunately there are many links provided below (videos Mike has made)
that focus on this region, this habitat, and even Bisbee!!  My personal takeaway from Saturday was this: despite our cultural climate and the apparent disregard for nature and native peoples, there are many generous and caring locals who go out of their way to remember our roots and to share this with others and to support and bolster places like Carr House.  It's very heartening.  -Terryl
